Mayo Clinic and other researchers have shown that a vaccine given to newborns is at least 60 percent effective against rotavirus in Ghana. Rotavirus causes fever, vomiting and diarrhea, which in infants can cause severe dehydration.

A study from investigators at MassGeneral Hospital for Children found that African-American or Hispanic children diagnosed with autism were significantly less likely than white children to have received subspecialty care or procedures related to conditions that often accompany autism spectrum disorders.

Investigators recruit subjects for Boston Children's Hand Transplant Program

Boston Children's Hospital today announced that investigators are now recruiting subjects for the world's first pediatric hand transplant program. The Boston Children's Hand Transplant Program, led by principal investigator Amir Taghinia, MD, and William Harmon, MD, is a research-based program that will offer bi-lateral hand transplants for children living without two functioning hands.

Educating pediatricians on appropriate antibiotic usage can improve outcomes in children’s infections

As disease-causing microbes continue their worrisome trend of developing resistance to commonly used antibiotics, public health experts have called for more selective use of those medicines. A new study suggests that educating pediatricians in their offices, and auditing their prescription patterns, encourages them to choose more appropriate antibiotics for children with common respiratory infections.

Study: Intervention improves adherence to prescribing guidelines for pediatric bacterial ARTIs

An intervention consisting of clinician education coupled with personalized audit and feedback about antibiotic prescribing improved adherence to prescribing guidelines for common pediatric bacterial acute respiratory tract infections, although the intervention did not affect antibiotic prescribing for viral infections, according to a study in the June 12 issue of JAMA.

CSHL scientists solve the mystery of why some infants born with grave syndrome

By identifying a protein that acts as a genetic modifier, scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory have solved the mystery of why some infants are born with a grave syndrome consisting of cleft palate and major deformities of the skin and limbs, while other infants bearing the same predisposing genetic mutation bear little or no sign of the illness, called EEC.

At the end of every school year, Dr. Carla Minutti, pediatric endocrinologist at Loyola University Health System, was surprised by the amount of school supplies her two children brought home. She hatched an idea that connected families at Lincoln Elementary School in River Forest with Loyola Medical Center doctors and students to provide the leftover supplies to children around the world.
