The Rice lab of bioengineer Amina Qutub designed an algorithm called "progeny clustering" that is being used in a hospital study to identify which treatments should be given to children with leukemia.

Health care has much to learn from innovative high-tech companies, but not in the way most people think, according to a Perspective published today in the New England Journal of Medicine and authored by innovation experts from the Perelman School of Medicine and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Innovation, they say, can most effectively achieve meaningful outcomes by testing many new ideas quickly, cheaply, and contextually.

UNMCC receives NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation for cancer treatment, research programs

The University of New Mexico Cancer Center has been awarded the highest designation and rating in the United States for cancer treatment and research programs. It has received the National Cancer Institute's "NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center" designation, identifying it as one of the leading cancer centers in the nation and the only such cancer center in New Mexico.

Of high-risk therapeutic devices approved via the Food and Drug Administration Premarket Approval (PMA) pathway between 2010 and 2011, there has been wide variation in both the number and quality of premarket and postmarket studies, with approximately 13 percent of initiated postmarket studies completed between 3 and 5 years after FDA approval, according to a study in the August 11 issue of JAMA.
