Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center introduces CeliacNow website

It's estimated that one in 100 people in the United States are living with celiac disease, but there are only a handful of celiac centers throughout the country. In response to a growing need for educational materials, clinicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Celiac Center have launched CeliacNow, a nutritional management website designed to maximize the health and wellbeing of people living with celiac disease and other gluten-related disorders.

IDSA guidelines describe best methods for diagnosis of prosthetic joint infections

Of the one million people each year who get hips and knees replaced, as many as 20,000 will get an infection in the new joint, a number that is expected to skyrocket in the next 20 years. For the first time, Brazil in 2013 will enter into a new type of public-private partnership that allows the nation to produce a generic version of the antiretroviral (ARV) drug atazanavir sulphate, which will be under patent through its producer Bristol-Myers Squibb until 2017, Inter Press Service reports.

WHO's decision to 'monitor' R&D 'deeply disappointing'

In this PLoS "Speaking of Medicine" blog post, Julien Potet and Katy Athersuch of Medecins Sans Frontieres' (MSF) Access Campaign say that the WHO's decision last week to "simply continue monitoring" the medical research and development (R&D) industry's ability to address the needs of people living in developing countries "by creating a global R&D 'observatory'" is "a deeply disappointing outcome that will not help re-shape priorities, increase funding or catalyze development of urgently needed new medical tools; at best it will only underscore further how badly these actions are needed."

Just weeks before the 2013 General Assembly convenes, the state's provider fee, called a "bed tax" by some, remains a high-profile wild card -- one that could deal Georgia's hospital industry a crippling blow. If the fee is not renewed -- and anti-tax forces will oppose it -- the Medicaid system may lose $430 million-plus that the assessment now generates. That loss would swell the state's Medicaid financial shortfall, which is already about $400 million (Miller, 12/6).
