President's Malaria Initiative contributing to 'major progress' against disease, should be expanded

In this post in The Hill's "Congress Blog," Kent Campbell, director of the Malaria Control Program at PATH, and Jonathon Simon, chair of the Department of International Health and director of the Center for Global Health and Development at the Boston University School of Public Health, write that "major progress has been made in the fight against malaria, thanks in large part to the efforts of the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI)," and call the effort "a shining example of the profound impact the U.S. is making in global health."

Novel model may allow clinicians to predict potential for recovery after SCI

For more than 1 million people in the U.S. living with spinal cord injury, the frightening days and weeks following the injury are filled with uncertainty about their potential for recovery and future independence. A new model based on motor scores at admission and early imaging studies may allow clinicians to predict functional outcomes and guide decision-making for therapy and care-giving needs, as described in an article published in Journal of Neurotrauma, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.

Provista, Physician Strategy Group at USPI partner to deliver supply chain services

United Surgical Partners International's (USPI) Physician Strategy Group (PSG) and Provista, LLC announced today that they are working together to deliver supply chain services to over 9,000 physician customers who perform procedures at surgical facilities centers operated by USPI. The program, called Purchasing Plus, is expected to help those physicians save 10-15% on supplies, services, and capital equipment.

"Protecting the patents of drug makers ... as part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership has drawn criticism from groups such as Doctors Without Borders and Public Citizen," and "the proposed accord has also spurred calls from U.S. lawmakers for greater transparency about the negotiations," the news service writes.
