European Commission announces 40M euro increase in aid to Africa's Sahel region

The European Commission (E.C.) on Monday "announced an increase in funding to the Sahel by 40 million euros [$50.5 million] as the food crisis is set to peak in the coming weeks putting 18 million people at risk from hunger," the Guardian reports, noting that the new money brings the total amount from the E.U. to 337 million euros, or $425 million.

Examining the decision's possible impact on voters, access to insurance coverage

A new poll finds that regardless of the Supreme Court's decision, less than a majority of Americans will be happy with the outcome. Republican voters, however, are more open to the idea of the court nullifying part of the law. Meanwhile, even if the law is upheld, an estimated 26 million people will still go without insurance, including illegal immigrants and those eligible for Medicaid but who don't enroll.

Long-term cancer survivors take sick leave more often than their disease-free colleagues, suggesting that they struggle at work despite their ability to work five years after diagnosis. These findings by Steffen Torp, from Vestfold University College in Norway, and colleagues is published online in Springer's Journal of Cancer Survivorship.

In a feature story, Al Jazeera examines Cuba's national health care system, which "works -- or is supposed to work -- by emphasizing primary and preventative health care." However, after subsidies from the former Soviet Union "ended and Cuba's economy went into a tailspin, nothing was the same again," according to the news agency, which notes the system experiences drug shortages, patients have long wait times, and some hospitals are dirty or malfunctioning.

Survey: 1 in 5 U.S. women experience sexual assault during their lifetime

Despite the fact that the majority of women presenting to emergency departments for care after sexual assault experience severe pain, very few receive pain treatment. These were the findings of a multi-site research study led by Samuel McLean, MD, MPH, director of the TRYUMPH Research Program in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. The results were published online in the Journal of Pain on June 15, 2012.

Recession-plagued states diverted scarce money away from pensions to pay for more immediate concerns, leaving a $757 billion hole in the retirement funds covering millions of public employees, according to a study released Monday. … States also faced a $627 billion shortfall in health care services for retirees. Essentially, for every $1 they'll eventually have to pay out in health care, states had set aside only 5 cents.
