The US Environmental Protection Agency is stepping up international efforts to help curb rising pollution, the waste of natural resources, and health problems associated with trashed electronics, announcing today a new agreement with the United Nations University.

Misbehaving docs four times likely to be men than women: Study

According to a new study male doctors are four times more likely to be disciplined for misconduct than female doctors. Most common reason for the discipline was sexual misconduct, accounting for 24 per cent of all cases say researchers. Unethical or illegal prescribing accounted for 21 per cent of misconduct cases, while 8 per cent involved death and 9 per cent involved physical harm to the patient. The study is published today in the Medical Journal of Australia.

The Senate unanimously approved Sen. Jane Nelson's bill to find extensive cost savings in Texas' Medicaid program, the primary health care provider for children, the disabled and the very poor. ... The measure expands Medicaid managed care into South Texas, where it has long been carved out — expected to save the state $290 million over the biennium.

Most nurses are chronically sleep deprived

Sleep has become a hot button topic in health care, at least when it comes to physicians. The fact that doctors-in-training don't get enough of it has resulted in regulations governing duty hours in resident training programs across the nation. In 2002, the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) reduced the number of hours that resident physicians can work to 80 hours per week.

Cote d'Ivoire in need of additional humanitarian assistance, on verge of health crisis, U.N. agency says

Though post-election violence in Cote d'Ivoire has ended, thousands of people remain in need of humanitarian assistance, including health care, education, water, shelter and protection, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement (.pdf) on Wednesday, the U.N. News Centre reports.

Animal-assisted therapy reduces anxiety in patients undergoing MRI: Study

Patients who undergo MRI often suffer from elevated anxiety. Patient discomfort may cause poor image quality due to motion artifacts or early termination. Anxiolytic medications are currently used to reduce this anticipated anxiety , but animal-assisted therapy may be a non-invasive alternative treatment with fewer adverse effects, according to an exhibit being presented at the 2011 American Roentgen Ray Society's annual meeting.

The National Safety Council and FocusDriven today announced the winners of their joint "On the Road, Off the Phone" public service announcement contest, sponsored by The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. Because 21 percent of motor vehicle crashes involve cell phone conversations, NSC and FocusDriven asked aspiring filmmakers to create short videos explaining the dangers of cell phone conversations while driving.
