Entry deadline for second annual CLIO Healthcare Awards extended to August 27, 2010

The entry deadline has been extended for the second annual CLIO Healthcare Awards. All work appearing between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010 must be submitted to the CLIO Healthcare Awards no later than August 27, 2010. In an effort to provide an innovative and eco-friendly entry process, once again the CLIO Healthcare Awards will receive submissions online only at www.CLIOHealthcare.com. Professionals now have additional time to refine their entries, including international work, made eligible for the first time.

Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Report for July 2010

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index dropped slightly to 67.1 in July from June's second-highest score of 67.3 and shows a modest retraction in the nation's well-being rebound, with a fall in four of the six sub-indices comprising the Index. A portion of the overall dip is attributed to the continued decline in the Work Environment.

ER visit rates increase at twice growth rate of population

A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that emergency visit rates have increased at twice the rate of growth of the U.S. population from 1997 to 2007; Medicaid patients accounted for a large proportion of the increase, often coming with more severe illnesses and complications.

Eastern Pennsylvania Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association launches response team with Amish community

Underscoring that a sudden cardiac arrest emergency requires quick response and that automated external defibrillators are easy to use, the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association has launched a unique community response team with the Amish community of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, at the center of a broad program that will deploy AEDs in public locations, schools and even on horse and buggies and Amish farms to protect the community's residents and visitors from the nation's leading cause of death.

Michael Mastej also accused his former employer of filing fraudulent claims on services HMA's facilities provided the ill-gotten Medicare patients.

Bristol-Myers Squibb, ACTF announce enhanced agreement to support ADAPs

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and the ADAP Crisis Task Force today announced an enhanced agreement to support the efforts of AIDS Drug Assistance Programs to provide antiretroviral medicines to people living with HIV and AIDS. Building on an agreement signed in March of 2010, today's announcement marks a multi-year enhancement to assist ADAPs in meeting the challenges of increasing patient case loads and strained government funding.

Idaho Department of Health and Welfare awards HMS two cost containment contracts

HMS today announced that it had been awarded two cost containment contracts by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, which administers Idaho's Medicaid program. Under the first contract, HMS will to identify third party coverage for casualty and liability claims paid by Idaho Medicaid, and pursue recoveries.

Tips to prevent back pain for frequent laptop users

The symptoms are familiar to any student who has ever spent a long night pounding out a paper on a laptop computer: an aching neck, throbbing head and tingling fingers.Because of the way the computers are designed, using a laptop almost inevitably leads to poor posture, said Kevin Carneiro, DO, a doctor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Incorrect posture and computer overuse can cause debilitating physical problems, such as sore muscles or repetitive stress injuries. Typing can also cause carpal tunnel syndrome, an injury to the nerve that passes through the wrist.
