NOTA questions FDA's attempted regulation of on-site tests

The National On-site Testing Associates, Inc. (NOTA) has been revived in response to an attempt by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate on-site, or point of collection, oral fluids drug and alcohol tests used by many small employers for non-medical purposes. NOTA is an association of manufacturers, users, and distributors of on-site drugs of abuse tests. These tests are sold throughout the world for use in workplace, sports, school, insurance, and criminal justice settings and numerous other non-medical applications. These tests are safe, accurate, cost effective, and easy to use.

Study suggests participating in volunteer activities may prevent frailty in older adults

Frailty is a geriatric condition marked by weight loss, low energy and strength, and low physical activity. UCLA researchers followed 1,072 healthy adults aged 70 to 79 between 1988 and 1991 to determine if productive activities - specifically volunteering, paid work and child care - prevent the onset of frailty.

U.S. Government's interoperable identity management standards meet NHIN’s requirements

Achieving the secure nationwide exchange of health information and patient medical information using the Internet will be advanced by adopting existing standards, technology and currently used approaches to authenticate digital identities, according to testimony presented today to the National Health Information Network (NHIN) committee advising on the development of a nationwide health information infrastructure. The testimony was delivered by SAFE-BioPharma Association, the non-profit that developed and maintains the SAFE-BioPharma® digital identity and signature standard.

Physiotherapy not "alternative" medicine or "voodoo", says CPA

The Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) was surprised and dismayed to read articles in two of North America's most prestigious newspapers which question the use of certain commonly used physiotherapy treatments for musculoskeletal injuries. The articles, titled "Some physical therapy may be a stretch" and "Treat me, but no tricks please" suggest that ice, heat, ultrasound and other modalities are "voodoo" treatments.

On Thursday, Rajiv Shah was sworn in as USAID administrator at an official ceremony in Washington, D.C., Foreign Policy's blog, "The Cable," reports. "Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed overwhelming praise and relief before swearing in Shah," according to the blog, which noted that Clinton's remarks provided some "insider details" about Shah.

Illicit drug use among older adults may lead to increase in substance abuse treatment services

A new study done by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicates that the aging of the baby boom generation is resulting in a dramatic increase in levels of illicit drug use among adults 50 and older. These increases may require the doubling of substance abuse treatment services needed for this population by 2020, according to the report.

A Lancet Comment examines the "grossly insufficient" progress towards meeting the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of reducing under-5 child mortality. "Accelerated progress can be achieved, even in the poorest environments, through: integrated, evidence-driven, and community-based programmes that focus on addressing the major causes of death, including pneumonia, diarrhoea, newborn disorders, malaria, HIV, and undernutrition; reaching the unreached with a basic package of interventions at large scale and achieving coverage with equity; and using data for action and advocacy," the comment concludes (You et al., 1/9).

Reform will save and create millions of more jobs, says Speaker Pelosi

Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on a new report released today by the Center for American Progress that shows that health insurance reform will create up to 4 million more jobs over the next decade than would be created without reform. The report finds that health care reform could increase the number of jobs in the United States by about 250,000 to 400,000 per year over the coming decade.
