Scientists reveal link between depression and paraventricular thalamus

Scientists from the RIKEN Brain Science Institute have shown that a mouse strain with a mutation that leads to dysfunction of mitochondria--the "powerhouses" that provide energy to cells--spontaneously undergo periodic episodes of depression-like behavior that resemble those in human. Through this research, published in Molecular Psychiatry, the scientists uncovered a link between depression and the paraventricular thalamus, a region of the brain not previously tied to depression.

Noninvasive ventilation and supplemental oxygen during exercise training benefit patients with severe COPD

Researchers from Turkey's Ege University Department of Biostatistics evaluated the effects of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and supplemental oxygen during exercise training (ET) and found it to have multiple physiologic benefits in patients with severe COPD. Results showed that supplemental oxygen during exercise helped to reduce hyperinflation and improve respiratory muscle function and exercise capacity.

Lung cancer patients undergoing LDCT experience elevated distress before screening

Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening is recommended to screen patients with an increased risk of developing lung cancer, but little research regarding the emotional toll of screening has been conducted. Researchers from Stony Brook Cancer Center in Stony Brook, New York found 43 percent of patients undergoing LDCT experienced elevated distress before screening, and one-third of patients experienced continued distress even after being told there was no sign of cancer.

Mayo Clinic researchers in Rochester, Minnesota, collaborated with the University of Mississippi Medical Center on a recent study, "Troponin T as a Predictor of End-Stage Renal Disease and All-Cause Death in African-American and Whites From Hypertensive Families." Sleep apnea may increase gout risk

Sleep apnea may increase the risk of developing gout, a new study shows. Among 9865 patients with newly-diagnosed sleep apnea and 43,598 comparators of similar weight, investigators identified 270 new cases of gout over one year of follow-up, resulting in incidence rates of 8.4/1000 and 4.8/1000 person-years, respectively. The increased risk of gout was 60% higher among patients with sleep apnea.
