Study finds breast MRI equipment in U.S. meets ACRIN and EUSOBI standards

An overwhelming majority of Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC) facilities performing breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the U.S. are up-to-par with American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) and European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) technical standards and requirements, according to a study in the November issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

Scientists use electron microscopes to study mechanism of perforin protein to punch holes in rogue cells

Scientists from the UK and Australia have seen the human immune system's assassin a protein called perforin in action for the first time. The UK team, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Wellcome Trust, is based at Birkbeck College where they used powerful electron microscopes to study the mechanism that perforin uses to punch holes in rogue cells.

FDA approves Afinitor drug for tuberous sclerosis complex

The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (TS Alliance) today announced the first drug approved for a tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) indication by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). This drug, manufactured by Novartis Oncology, is called Afinitor and will be used to treat subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGAs) in individuals with TSC.

OptiNose presents sumatriptan Phase II trial results at 2nd European Headache and Migraine Trust International

OptiNose Inc. announced the results from an analysis comparing the Phase II clinical trial obtained with its novel delivery technology to that of other formulations. The analysis suggests rapid absorption rate alone may not explain the efficacy in migraines treated with sumatriptan delivered with the Company's novel bi-directional technology. UK HealthCare transplant recipient wins at 2010 U.S. Transplant Games

One transplant recipient from UK HealthCare, Dan Gutenson of Stanford, Ky., joined the 36 other members of "Team Kentucky" in Madison, Wisconsin for the 2010 U.S. Transplant Games this past summer. Gutenson, who received his kidney transplant in Sept. 2009, suffered from polycystic disease and received a kidney from a living donor in the church he pastors in Lincoln County, Ky.
