A study on development of deaf children fitted with a Cochlear Implant

A multidisciplinary group at Malaga University, headed by Ignacio Moreno-Torres, is collecting information on the milestones that mark the development of deaf children fitted with a Cochlear Implant (CI) and studying to what extent the social and family environment affects this development. This research is funded with 101,000 euro by the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Innovation.

pSivida achieves milestone in Phase III Iluvien trial, last patient completes two-year follow up visit

pSivida Corp., a leading drug delivery company that has developed two of the only three products approved by the FDA for the long-term, sustained release delivery of drug to treat chronic back of the eye disease, today announced that the last patient in the Phase III clinical trial being conducted by its collaborative partner, Alimera Sciences, for a new treatment for diabetic macular edema (DME) has completed the two-year follow up visit.

Genes to determine which rectal cancer patient can avoid surgical procedure for treatment

A set of 87 genes one day may be used to routinely determine which patients can be successfully treated for advanced rectal cancer without undergoing a surgical procedure, researchers announced at the 2009 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons.

PIKAMAB, a stratified medicine biopharmaceutical company, announced today that it has secured exclusive rights to two issued U.S. patents from Hospital for Special Surgery, New York. PIKAMAB is developing Lupus TherasightTM, a novel theragnostic product that will eventually help guide the drug development process and patient treatment protocols in the areas of lupus and lupus nephritis.

Depression becomes more difficult to treat the longer it goes undiagnosed or undertreated

A new survey of 2,001 adults living with depression revealed that despite being diagnosed for an average of 12 years, many unknowingly took actions that could have sabotaged their chances of getting well. Furthermore, on average, it took about six years for respondents to seek diagnosis from a health care professional, suggesting these adults may have been coping with depression for as long as 18 years.

Projected to open in mid 2010, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) is a facility dedicated to the study and care of military personnel and veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and psychological health issues. Study shows type 2 diabetes patients treated with ACTOplus met experience blood sugar reduction

A study, published online in the journal Current Medical Research and Opinion, showed that a greater percentage of patients with type 2 diabetes treated with the fixed-dose combination ACTOplus met® (pioglitazone HCl and metformin HCl) as initial therapy reached the study goal of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) of less than or equal to 7 percent compared to either component alone.
