Lyophilized amniotic membrane in strabismus surgery can cause severe fibrosis

Postoperative adhesions are a major complication in strabismus surgery. Amniotic membrane has been used in the hopes of preventing these adhesions by forming a biological barrier during healing. In an article in the December 2010 issue of the Journal of AAPOS, a team of researchers from Cairo University have discovered that the new approach may also have the opposite effect.

Sleep-deprived physicians not to perform elective surgeries without patient's consent

While regulations have been put in place to restrict the work hours of doctors in training, no such regulations exist for fully trained physicians. An editorial in this week's New England Journal of Medicine argues that sleep-deprived physicians should not be permitted to proceed with an elective surgery without a patient's informed, written consent.

On November 15, 2010 AngioScore Incorporated initiated a worldwide recall of the AngioSculpt® PTA Scoring Balloon Catheter, 0.018" OTW, balloon sizes: 4.0x20mm, 5.0x20mm, and 6.0x20mm. This recall was initiated because of a small number of reports from the field of distal bond failure which has resulted in peeling of the bond and/or detachment of the distal end of the scoring element, wherein the proximal end of the scoring element remains secured to the catheter.

Jury returns $7M verdict for failure to diagnose and treat cardiac tamponade in bypass surgery patient

A New York State Supreme Court Queens County jury returned a $7,000,000.00 verdict against Patrick Monteleone M.D. and Newell Robinson, M.D. where they failed to diagnose and treat cardiac tamponade (bleeding into the chest) in their patient who underwent cardiac bypass surgery on November 17, 2004.

Promising initial data from STABLE clinical trial for endovascular treatment of Type B aortic dissection

Study investigators reported positive steps in Cook Medical's efforts to gain FDA approval of the treatment assessed in the STABLE clinical trial, designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a proximal endograft and a distal uncovered stent for the endovascular treatment of Type B aortic dissection for purposes of seeking FDA approval. The findings were presented by Dr. Joseph Lombardi at the 37th annual VEITHsymposium.

New study reveals statin therapy linked to reduced postoperative mortality

Statin drugs were first introduced to lower blood cholesterol concentrations; however, research is now discovering other benefits. A new study from France, published in the January 2011 issue of Anesthesiology, is the first to analyze the impact of preoperative chronic statin therapy on postoperative adverse events in surgical patients. Findings from the study suggest that statin therapy is associated with reduced postoperative mortality.
