Pressure BioSciences, Inc. and Target Discovery, Inc.,, today announced a strategic product licensing, manufacturing, co-marketing, and collaborative research and development agreement. Small study shows eprotirome decreases LDL cholesterol

People whose "bad" cholesterol and risk of future heart disease stay too high despite cholesterol-lowering statin therapy can safely lower it by adding a drug that mimics the action of thyroid hormone. In a report published in the Mar. 11, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Johns Hopkins and Swedish researchers say an experimental drug called eprotirome lowered cholesterol up to 32 percent in those already on statins, an effect equal to that expected from doubling the statin drug doses, without harmful side effects.

Reductions in tobacco use and increased screening for early detection reduces cancer death rates

A new American Cancer Society study finds progress in reducing cancer death rates is evident whether measured against baseline rates in 1970 or in 1990. The study appears in the open access journal PLos ONE, and finds a downturn in cancer death rates since 1990 results mostly from reductions in tobacco use, increased screening allowing early detection of several cancers, and modest to large improvements in treatment for specific cancers.

An analysis by researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California has found that only 32 percent of medication studies published in top medical journals compare the effectiveness of existing treatments. These studies, known as comparative effectiveness studies, help doctors know which therapies work best and under what circumstances they are most effective.

Mylan today reported that it has identified multiple flaws within a purported bioequivalence study sponsored by Bayer Inc. of Canada. The study compared Bayer's antihypertensive Adalat(R) XL(R) tablets, 60 mg, marketed in Canada, to Mylan's approved generic version, Mylan-Nifedipine Extended Release tablets, 60 mg, marketed in Canada.

According to the Alzheimer's Association's® 2010 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures, African-Americans are about two times more likely and Hispanics are about one and one-half times more likely than their white counterparts to have Alzheimer's and other dementias.
