Canadian PM, Tanzanian President open meeting to develop framework for $40b maternal and child health initiative

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete were in Geneva on Wednesday to open a meeting aimed at "developing a framework" to monitor the implementation of a $40 billion U.N. maternal and child health initiative, according to CBC News. Harper and Kikwete are co-chairs of a commission that is charged with ensuring accountability for the pledges.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is establishing a national registry for breast implants in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The registry is being developed in response to reports of a rare lymphoma--Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL)—in a very small number of women with breast implants.

New study finds disparities in chlamydia screening

A new study from the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute has found that Black and especially Hispanic young women are screened for chlamydia at a significantly higher rate than young white women. This discrepancy in screening rates may contribute to nationwide reporting of higher rates of this sexually transmitted disease among minority young women.

Breast and lung cancer: Shared risk and treatment

New research has shown that women who are heavy smokers before menopause, especially prior to giving birth, may significantly increase their risk of developing breast cancer. In the US study looking at almost 150,000 women from the Nurses’ Health Study; it was found that breast cancer rates increased with higher levels of smoking among younger age groups. The study appeared in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
