Researchers find way to get beneficial effects of estrogen without increasing woman's risk of cancer

Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have pinpointed a set of biological mechanisms through which estrogen confers its beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system, independent of the hormone's actions on cancer. Their investigation suggests that drugs targeting a specific subpopulation of estrogen receptors found outside the cell nucleus might activate the cardiovascular benefits of estrogen without increasing cancer risk.

Politico reports that Walter Dellinger, a former acting solicitor general and liberal scholar, "predicted Tuesday night that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe vs. Wade, the landmark decision that gives women abortion rights." Conservatives on the court have made overturning the decision a "trophy," he said, more likely to be won if a Republican chooses a replacement for Justice Anthony Kennedy.

High blood sugar in mother during pregnancy leads to reduced insulin sensitivity in children

Children of mothers whose blood glucose (sugar) was high during pregnancy are more likely to have low insulin sensitivity—a risk factor for type 2 diabetes—even after taking into consideration the children's body weight, a new study shows. Ultrasound-guided diffuse optical tomography holds promise for ascertaining early-stage invasive breast cancer

By combining two relatively inexpensive technologies based on sound and light waves, researchers hope to lower the rate at which women undergo breast biopsies for suspicious lesions. Results of the study on ultrasound-guided optical tomography are published in the online edition and the August print issue of Radiology.

Ostarine increases muscle mass and strength in postmenopausal women: Study

GTx, Inc. announced that Ostarine (GTx-024, formerly MK-2866) increased lean body mass and leg press strength in a head to head study evaluating Ostarine and another selective androgen receptor modulator, MK-3984, in postmenopausal women. The data were presented yesterday at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Endocrine Society. GTx is developing its lead SARM, Ostarine, for the treatment of cancer induced muscle wasting (cancer cachexia).
