Strong link between triglyceride levels and ischemic stroke in older women

In a surprising finding with significant implications for older women, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and NYU School of Medicine have found that high levels of triglycerides (blood fats) are the strongest risk factor for the most common type of stroke in older women – more of a risk factor than elevated levels of total cholesterol or of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.

Women better at parking than men – Study

The study by NCP examined the habits of 2,500 drivers using car park CCTV footage. It found that women were better at finding a space, aligning their vehicles to prepare to park, and were more centered when finally parked. They also note that when men drive with a female passenger they are more likely to “pose park” — in other words, try to impress his female companion — by choosing the smaller of two vacant spaces.

Heart burn drugs and hip fractures in postmenopausal women smokers: Study establishes link

A new study shows that postmenopausal women with a history of smoking who take heartburn drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for two years or longer may be more likely to sustain a hip fracture. The risk rises with longer use say researchers. But the risk does disappear after women stop taking these drugs for two years. Further women who never smoked were not at increased risk for hip fracture even if they took PPIs regularly, the study showed. The new findings appear in the journal BMJ.

Pfizer has recalled 1 million packs of Lo/Ovral-28 and generic norgestrel/ethinyl estradiol birth control pills. These pills that need to be taken in the correct sequence have been mixed up in packaging and women using them could be at risk of pregnancy.

Komen Breast Cancer Foundation cuts grants, ties to Planned Parenthood

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, a leading breast-cancer charity, will no longer give money to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer exams or education, it announced Tuesday. The rift comes from the political fight surrounding Planned Parenthood's abortion services.

Religious protests continue in response to Obama administration birth control rule

The White House continues to defend its new insurance coverage rule, which requires religiously affiliated nonprofit groups to provide free birth control coverage to women. Also in the news, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who is considered to be on the GOP short list for vice president, introduced legislation Tuesday that would vastly expand the opt-out ability of religious or faith-based employers.
