Scios announces results of ASCEND-HF trial for ADHF treatment

Scios Inc. announced today that the landmark investigational study of NATRECOR (nesiritide) for the treatment of acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF), ASCEND-HF, demonstrated no statistically significant difference from placebo in the co-primary endpoints of dyspnea, measured at six and 24 hours, or in the composite of heart failure re-hospitalizations and death during the first 30 days following treatment.

Dialysis patients at elevated risk for sudden cardiac death: Study

Approximately 500,000 Americans require dialysis to treat kidney disease; of that population nearly half of the deaths that occur are caused by cardiovascular disease. Dialysis patients are at elevated risk for sudden cardiac death, but physicians are unclear why these deaths occur because little research has been done to examine how to best manage heart disease in this high-risk population.

Reata to present bardoxolone methyl Phase 2b clinical trial data for CKD, type 2 diabetes at ASN Conference

NephRx initiates NX001 Phase I clinical trial to prevent DGF in kidney transplant patients

Rising kidney disease a worry – home dialysis may solve some problems

Kidney Health Australia (KHA) has released a report that predicts that the number of people needing treatment for serious kidney disease will triple to 30,000 by 2020 and treating serious kidney disease will cost the health system $12 billion over the next decade. The report, by the George Institute for Global Health, also found the annual cost of providing dialysis treatment was just over $79,000 per patient. This was compared to just over $49,000 per person taking part in a program which delivers the treatment not in a hospital but in the patient’s home.

Most kidney care providers opt to participate in new Medicare 'bundled' payment system: Study

The Kidney Care Council (KCC), a nonprofit national health care association composed of leading kidney dialysis provider companies who care for a majority of ESRD patients nationwide, released new data today revealing that 98 percent of kidney care providers participating in a recent study have opted to participate in the new Medicare "bundled" payment system in January 2011, more than twice the rate originally anticipated.
