Cancer prehabilitation has potential to reduce problems, improve physical and mental health outcomes

For patients with cancer, "prehabilitation"— interventions given between the time of diagnosis and the start of treatment—has the potential to reduce complications from treatments and improve physical and mental health outcomes, according to a report in the August American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

Elekta gets CE Mark approval for Clarity 4D Monitoring system

Elekta has received CE marking for its Clarity 4D Monitoring system permitting European clinics to implement this new way of reducing the uncertainty caused by prostate motion during radiation treatment. Physicians will be able to monitor the motion of the prostate with sub millimeter accuracy during the delivery of therapeutic radiation beams.

Researchers develop method to identify aggressive prostate cancers

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at Louisiana State University have developed a method for identifying aggressive prostate cancers that require immediate therapy. It relies on understanding the genetic interaction between single nucleotide polymorphisms. The goal is to better predict a prostate cancer's aggressiveness to avoid unnecessary radical treatment.

Study shows GreenLight laser therapy effective for BPH treatment

Data presented at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting demonstrate that treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia with GreenLight XPS laser therapy with MoXy fiber, instead of transurethral resection of the prostate, results in significantly shorter hospitalization, catheterization, and recovery times for patients, while maintaining equivalent safety and efficacy.

Tibial nerve stimulation reduces symptoms of overactive bladder, research finds

Beaumont Health System research finds that symptoms of overactive bladder, or OAB, were reduced in those who received tibial nerve stimulation. The three-year results published in the June issue of The Journal of Urology show participants with urinary frequency, urgency and involuntary loss of urine maintained significant improvement in their symptoms.

Long-term success rates of surgery to treat pelvic organ prolapse are lower than expected

Research conducted by the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network, an initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health, has revealed that the long-term success rates of a surgery to treat pelvic organ prolapse are lower than expected. Nearly one-third of women develop anatomic or symptomatic treatment failure within five years of undergoing sacrocolpopexy for pelvic organ prolapse, according to a study published in the May 15 issue of JAMA.

Abdominal sacrocolpopexy procedure effectively provides relief from POP symptoms

Results after seven years of follow-up suggest that women considering abdominal sacrocolpopexy (surgery for pelvic organ prolapse [POP]) should be counseled that this procedure effectively provides relief from POP symptoms; however, the anatomic support deteriorates over time; and that adding an anti-incontinence procedure decreases, but does not eliminate the risk of stress urinary incontinence, and mesh erosion can be a problem, according to a study in the May 15 issue of JAMA.
