Research provides new understanding of the effects of race on heart disease

Thomas Jefferson University researchers have discovered that the formation of blood clots follows a different molecular route in African Americans versus European Americans, providing a new understanding of the effects of race on heart disease. The finding could one day help doctors provide more individualized treatment of heart disease and other blood-clot-related illnesses, according to research publishing online November 10th in Nature Medicine.

Many elderly patients who start dialysis after age 75 die within one year

New research from Mayo Clinic finds that half of elderly patients who start dialysis after age 75 will die within one year. The findings are being presented this week at the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week 2013 in Atlanta.

Penn Medicine awarded $1.5M to study health care disparities among people with disabilities

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has been awarded $1.5 million by The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to launch the Mrs. A and Mr. B Project to study health care disparities among people with disabilities. A collaborative research effort with Virtual Ability, Inc., the study aims to provide patients with information that will help them make more informed decisions about their medical care.

Arizona professor receives 2013 Rosalynn Carter Leadership in Caregiving Award

November is National Caregivers Month, a time to acknowledge the important role family and friends play in caring for their ailing and elderly family members. Aptly timed, the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving recently named David W. Coon, PhD, associate vice provost and professor in the College of Nursing & Health Innovation at Arizona State University, and his fellow experts the 2013 Rosalynn Carter Leadership in Caregiving Award.

A pilot study by a multi-disciplinary team of investigators at Georgetown University suggests that a simple dot test could help doctors gauge the extent of dopamine loss in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Their study is being presented at Neuroscience 2013, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.

Covidien fourth quarter net sales increase 2% to $2.56 billion

Covidien plc today reported results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013 (July - September 2013). Fourth-quarter net sales of $2.56 billion increased 2% from the $2.50 billion in the fourth quarter a year ago. Foreign exchange rate movement lowered the quarterly sales growth rate by three percentage points.
