Pfizer announces IES analysis of Aromasin in breast cancer recurrence

Pfizer today announced results from an exploratory analysis of the Intergroup Exemestane Study (IES) at a median follow-up of 91 months in estrogen-receptor positive (ER+) or estrogen-receptor unknown (ER-unknown) women that looked at breast cancer free survival (BCFS) and censored deaths that occurred prior to breast cancer relapse.

Texas ranks 4th in terms of aggregate Medicaid underfunding, according to Medicaid analysis

A new Eljay, LLC analysis of the nation's Medicaid program released by the American Health Care Association (AHCA) projects that Medicaid underfunds the actual cost of providing quality long term care in 2009 by $271.1 million in Texas, and that Texas seniors rank 4th in the nation in cumulative underfunding of this care.

Glucose can aid in preventing low sodium levels in patients undergoing prostate surgery

In men undergoing prostate surgery, excessive fluid absorption can lead to dangerously low sodium levels. Adding a small amount of glucose to the irrigation fluid used during surgery can help anesthesiologists to prevent this rare but potentially serious complication, reports a study in the December issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS).

Studies raise questions about the role and responsibilities of patients on medication safety

In a new study to asses patient awareness of medications prescribed during a hospital visit, 44% of patients believed they were receiving a medication they were not, and 96% were unable to recall the name of at least one medication that they had been prescribed during hospitalization. These findings are published today in the Journal of Hospital Medicine.
