GUMC licenses worldwide rights of 'theranostic' to BioMetrx

Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) has licensed worldwide rights of a potential novel cancer therapy and diagnostic, or "theranostic," to BioMetrx, LLC. The agent was invented by two Georgetown researchers.

Johnson & Johnson fourth quarter sales increase 3.9% to $16.3 billion

Johnson & Johnson today announced sales of $16.3 billion for the fourth quarter of 2011, an increase of 3.9% as compared to the fourth quarter of 2010. Operational sales increased 4.0% and the negative impact of currency was 0.1%.

Dutaseride may help prevent progression of early stage prostate cancer: Study

A new study suggests that men with early stage prostate cancer may benefit with drugs that can slow or stop the cancer’s progress. Less than 10 percent of the 100,000 men each year who are diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer and have the option of leaving the cancer in place. Rest get it removed using surgery or radiation. But those treatments can have serious side effects like impotence and incontinence.

DNA decoder – cheaper and faster

Life Technologies Corp. – a biotechnology company announced Tuesday that it has developed a machine to decode an individual's DNA in a day for just $1,000. The company said it was taking orders for the technology, which it expects to deliver in about a year. The Carlsbad, California, company said three major research institutions had already signed up for the $149,000 machine: the Baylor College of Medicine, the Yale School of Medicine and the Broad Institute of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
