Sciele Pharma, Inc., a U.S.-based group company of Shionogi & Co., Ltd. and Addrenex Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately-held U.S. pharmaceutical company specializing in developing drugs that regulate the adrenergic system, today announced that Sciele has agreed to acquire Addrenex.

Interim data from Hollis-Eden Pharmaceuticals' Apoptone Phase I/II clinical trial presented

Hollis-Eden Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today reported preliminary results of its ongoing Phase I/II clinical trial with Apoptone® (HE3235) for hormone-resistant prostate cancer (also called castrate-resistant prostate cancer or CRPC). Presented at the Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics Conference, which is co-sponsored by the AACR, NCI and EORTC, the poster is titled: "Results of preclinical and clinical Phase I/II open-label dose-ranging trial with HE3235, a synthetic adrenal hormone, in Castrate Resistant Prostate Cancer (CRPC)."

Decreased heart functions associated with fat collection in different body locations: Study

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have shown that fat collection in different body locations, such as around the heart and the aorta and within the liver, are associated with certain decreased heart functions. The study, which appears on-line in Obesity, also found that measuring a person's body mass index (BMI) does not reliably predict the amount of undesired fat in and around these vital organs.

In recognition of the ongoing commitment by millions of Canadians who build awareness of, and live with diabetes, World Diabetes Day will be celebrated on November 14. Bristol-Myers Squibb Canada and AstraZeneca Canada today announced that Health Canada has approved ONGLYZA(TM) (saxagliptin) which improves all three key measures of glycemic control - hemoglobin A1c (A1c), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and post-prandial glucose (PPG) - when taken in combination with other commonly used oral anti-diabetic agents (metformin or a sulfonylurea).

Low birth weight increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Until recently scientists had attributed this to maternal malnutrition during pregnancy. However, now it seems that genetic background may also play a major role. A research team of Technische Universität München and Helmholtz Zentrum München has now demonstrated, that gene variants which influence insulin metabolism can also affect birth weight.

CVS Caremark's medication adherence program for people with diabetes has positive impact

CVS Caremark said the company's comprehensive adherence program for people with diabetes positively impacts medication adherence for both new and continuing patients. A review of data tracking the program found that 75.6 percent of patients continuing on a diabetes therapy who participated in the adherence program maintained optimal adherence to their prescribed therapy vs. 61.2 percent in the control group.
