Phamacology

Deepthi has a Master's of Pharmacy (M. Pharm.) degree and 12 years of research experience. She initially dabbled in the fields of medical transcription and subtitling for the Hollywood film industry, before setting her sights on a career in medical writing.

During her postgraduate tenure, Deepthi specialized in the study of crude plant drugs (pharmacognosy). This field of study gave Deepthi an appreciation for the immense potential of modern scientific research to preserve and validate the ancient traditional systems of medicine practiced in India.

She also had the opportunity to work as a project trainee in a research institute focused on the study of traditional herbal formulations used for therapeutic and holistic treatments.

During her time here, Deepthi was actively involved in the isolation of active ingredients and development of biomarkers using different analytical techniques such as high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), as well as mass spectroscopy to differentiate an original plant species from substitutes or adulterants. Such research helps in maintaining the authenticity of herbal formulations as set out in the traditional pharmacopeias.

Although passionate about research and development, Deepthi was equally fascinated by the field of pharmacovigilance and medical writing. As a result, she landed up working for GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines (GSK), Bangalore as a medical/scientific writer specializing in writing epidemiological trials. As a regulatory writer, she was fortunate to work and complete many global projects within stringent timelines, something which she found highly motivating. Deepthi continued working with GSK, first as a full-time employee and then as a consultant, until 2016.

She went on to work as a consultant scientific writer with one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world and has been there since February 2016. She enjoys this role, as it allows her to stay abreast about the recent advances in medical research especially in the field of stem cell transplantation and oncology.

In addition to regulatory writing, Deepthi has also provided services to many medical communication companies in varied therapeutic and scientific areas in the form of article writing, re-writing and reviewing.

As a freelance science writer at News-Medical, Deepthi writes and peer reviews articles on diverse topics across the life sciences. She enjoys the variety of topics and is motivated by bringing something fresh to the table.

In her spare time, Deepthi enjoys recording her thoughts and ideas as poetry, some of which go into her blog. She also loves reading, especially inspirational stories by authors such as Sudha Murthy, Sri M, and others.
