$1.85 million grant to study how digital games can improve players' health behaviors and outcomes

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) today announced more than $1.85 million in grants for research that will offer unprecedented insight into how digital games can improve players' health behaviors and outcomes. With funding from RWJF's Health Games Research national program, nine research teams across the country will conduct extensive studies to discover, for example, how the popular dance pad video game Dance Dance Revolution might help Parkinson's patients reduce the risk of falling, how Wii Active might be most effectively implemented in high schools to help overweight students lose weight, how a mobile phone game with a breath interface might help smokers quit or reduce their tobacco use, or how facial recognition games might be designed to help people with autism learn to identify others' emotions.

Thermo Fisher Scientific's revenues decrease by 2% in third quarter 2009

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, reported that revenues decreased 2% to $2.53 billion in the third quarter of 2009, compared with $2.59 billion in the 2008 quarter. These results reflect the impact of foreign currency translation, which lowered revenues by 2%, and acquisitions, which increased revenues by 2%. GAAP diluted earnings per share (EPS) were $.53 in 2009, versus $.50 in the year-ago period. GAAP operating income for the 2009 quarter was $275 million, compared with $286 million in 2008, and GAAP operating margin was 10.9%, compared with 11.1% a year ago.

Illumina and Solexa deny patent infringement allegations

Illumina, Inc. today announced that, together with Solexa its wholly owned subsidiary, it has filed its initial response to the lawsuit brought by Life Technologies and Applied Biosystems on September 21, 2009 in U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware. In their answer, Illumina and Solexa have denied all of Life’s and AB’s allegations of patent infringement, and have asserted that AB’s licensed patents are invalid.
