Feature Writer

B.Sc. Linguistics

Francesca has always had a passion for writing; her favorite pass time is reading blogs and books alike as well as writing her first novel.

Her interest in writing and reading stemmed from studying the English language at college, alongside health and social care. These two subjects unknowingly went hand in hand and allowed Francesca to broaden her horizons, noticing how language can affect individuals in a care setting.

An interest in studying health sciences began when she volunteered at a care home in 2016; she understood how illnesses can not only affect people’s physical health but also mental health. She was able to see that individuals with illnesses such as aphasia and dementia struggled with understanding and production of language. These illnesses affect the production of language in the left hemisphere of the brain which influenced her to study in more detail the brain and how language is produced. Without language, many individuals struggle in multiple aspects of their life.

From a young age, Francesca has experienced health problems in her family, including herself. She was intrigued by researching each illness and problems that her family faced. One main area of research for her was hypermobility; which intrigued her and therefore she continued her study into health sciences. Her interest in both English and science combined intrigued her and inspired her to continue her studies at university.

The interest Francesca holds in health sciences meant that her major at university was in Psycholinguistics, focusing on the science behind language learning and production. Therefore, inspiring Francesca to focus her research on illnesses that affect language production, understanding, grammar and vocabulary in the left hemisphere of the brain.

Francesca was inspired to learn all about the recovery and development of language. One of the reasons that Francesca, for a short time, worked for the National Health Service, NHS. Gaining experience in knowledge of medical jargon and how illnesses are tackled and dealt with in a health care environment. Now Francesca is ready to take the next step into her writing career and write health articles to combine both topics of interest; English and Health sciences.

When she is not writing, Francesca loves to travel and visit friends around the world. A new interest in training her puppy has come to light; she enjoys taking her puppy on long walks and discovering woodland walks around the local area.
