MSKCC researchers study novel approach to treat metastatic melanoma

Physician-scientists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center are studying a novel approach to treat metastatic melanoma, known as immunotherapy, which uses the body's own immune system to attack cancer. Presented today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting, encouraging new data shows - for the first time - a survival benefit in metastatic melanoma patients using an immunotherapy discovered and clinically investigated by researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

Phase I study results of Pharmacyclics' PCI-32765 Btk inhibitor for B cell NHL presented at ASCO

Pharmacyclics, Inc. today announced results from a Phase I study of its novel orally administered Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) inhibitor, PCI-32765, in patients with relapsed or refractory B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and Waldenstroms Macroglobulinemia (WM). These data are being presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting taking place this week in Chicago, IL.

Plexxikon announces Phase 1 extension study results of PLX4032 in metastatic colorectal cancer

Plexxikon announced today the results of a Phase 1 extension study in metastatic colorectal cancer that showed clinical activity of PLX4032 as a single agent in this hard-to-treat patient population. PLX4032 is a novel, oral small molecule targeting an oncogenic BRAF mutation found in over 50 percent of melanomas, about 10 percent of colorectal cancers and eight percent of all solid tumors.

A novel study by German researchers reported that alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking were associated with increased migraines and tension-type headaches in high school students. Coffee drinking and physical inactivity were associated specifically with migraines. Results of this study, the first to investigate modifiable risk factors for different types of headaches in a youth population, appear online early in Headache, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American Headache Society.
