The Partnership at Drugfree.org issues statement on FDA approval of VIVITROL for opioid dependence

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of Alkermes' opioid dependence medication (VIVITROL) for the prevention of relapse to opioid dependence following opioid detoxification is positive news for families of young adults and all those who are struggling to overcome opioid addiction.  Addiction, a disease of the human brain, is a chronic illness while opioid dependence is frequently characterized by relapse.  

"Opioid dependence, whether from misuse of prescription pain medications or illicit use of heroin, is one of the most imperative health issues facing our nation, and as an organization, we have devoted significant resources to help families find appropriate treatment for a loved one with an addiction and support that person in recovery," said Steve Pasierb, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Partnership at Drugfree.org.  "This new indication for Alkermes' product as a non-addictive approach to prevent relapse to opioid dependence in people age 18 and older brings hope to the families we serve.  Our view is that this medication must be used in concert with appropriate addiction treatment services and psychosocial support."

Parents are at the center of the organization's mission, and The Partnership at Drugfree.org recently unveiled a new name and expanded resources, providing them with answers and support at whatever their stage of need, from prevention to recovery.  Among these new offerings are dedicated treatment resources on drugfree.org, and specifically, Time To Get Help, a comprehensive tool that includes information on how to obtain a proper assessment, identify and pay for appropriate treatment and connect with other parents who have had their own family experiences with substance abuse and addiction.

Recognizing that 11 million American adolescents and young adults, ages 12-29, need help with drug and alcohol problems and almost 23 million people in the U.S., age 12 or older, are struggling with substance abuse, The Partnership at Drugfree.org worked with parents and experts in the field of substance abuse, treatment and recovery to create Time To Get Help. This new treatment resource and community helps parents and caregivers gain a better understanding of teen alcohol and drug abuse, dependence and addiction; get support from experts and other parents who have been there and understand the challenges and emotions of caring for an addicted child; and find the right treatment for their child and family.
