Calif. hospitals bank on tech investments

"The Recovery Act allocated $19 billion to hospitals and physicians for the implementation of Electronic Health Records. Hospitals can receive up to several million dollars, depending on their size, and individual physicians up to $44,000, for using certified EHR technology. At Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Chief Medical Information Officer Dr. Pravene Nath said the hospital will begin assessing the number of physicians that could qualify for the reimbursements."

Gilead Sciences signs definitive agreement to acquire CGI Pharmaceuticals

Gilead Sciences, Inc. and CGI Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately-held, development-stage pharmaceutical company focused on small molecule chemistry and kinase biology, today announced the signing of a definitive agreement pursuant to which Gilead will acquire CGI. Under the terms of the agreement, Gilead will acquire CGI for up to $120 million, the majority as an upfront payment and the remaining based on clinical development progress, all of which will be financed through available cash on hand.

Athersys, CSCRM and CWRU receive $1M to advance MultiStem therapy for SCI

Athersys, Inc. and its collaborators, including the Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine and Case Western Reserve University, announced today that they have been awarded $1 million through the Ohio Third Frontier Biomedical Program to support research into the treatment of spinal cord injury with MultiStem, Athersys' proprietary stem cell product candidate.

Neuralstem signs definitive agreements to sell $10M of units in registered-direct offering

Neuralstem, Inc. announced today that it has entered into definitive agreements to sell $10 million of units at $2.80 per unit in a registered-direct offering to institutional investors. Japan's MHLW grants full marketing authorization to REVLIMID

Celgene International Sàrl announced that REVLIMID (lenalidomide) has been granted full marketing authorization by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for use in combination with dexamethasone as a treatment for patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma who have received at least one prior standard therapy. This marketing authorization represents the first regulatory approval of REVLIMID in Japan.

Researchers evaluate outcomes of SD and PD in patients with GISTs

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract. However, the duodenal location is less common. Nowadays, surgery is still the only curative approach for GIST. Numerous procedures can be performed to remove duodenal GIST. Some of these operations are extensive and require difficult reconstruction (like pancreaticoduodenectomy; PD). One of the options is a more limited intervention: segmental duodenectomy.

New method to synthesize drug candidates for testing

Some drugs may be more effective the longer they last inside the body. To prevent such drugs from being broken down too rapidly, pharmaceutical manufacturers often attach a fluorine-containing structure called a trifluoromethyl group. However, the processes now used require harsh reaction conditions or only work in a small number of cases, limiting their usefulness for synthesizing new drug candidates for testing.

Scientists discover characteristic amyloid plaques in retinas from Alzheimer's disease patients

The nerve cell-damaging plaque that builds up in the brain with Alzheimer's disease also builds up in the retinas of the eyes - and it shows up there earlier, leading to the prospect that noninvasive optical imaging of the eyes could lead to earlier diagnosis, intervention and monitoring of the disease, according to new research.
