HSS develops new surgery for stage IV flat foot deformity

A surgery developed at Hospital for Special Surgery can improve patient outcomes in individuals with severe adult flat foot deformity, a problem that is increasingly being seen in hospitals across the country. Patients who undergo the new surgery have better long-term outcome and mobility than those who undergo traditional surgery. The paper will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS, abstract 348) in National Harbor, Md., on July 8.

Minority children have fewer opportunities to be healthy and obtain quality education: Poll

Minority children and teenagers have fewer opportunities than white counterparts to be healthy, obtain a quality education and achieve economic success, according to a national survey of adults whose jobs involve children's education, health and economic well-being. The groundbreaking poll was released yesterday by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, which sought to gauge the level of disparities affecting children of color.

Thermo Fisher Scientific announces new methods to detect petroleum contamination in oysters and fish

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced that its global Food Safety Response Center located in Dreieich, Germany, has developed two new analytical screening methods to detect petroleum contamination in oysters and fish, specifically hydrocarbons and poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), resulting from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Gore provides update on REDUCE Clinical Study of HELEX Septal Occluder for PFO closure

W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore) today provided an update on the Gore REDUCE Clinical Study, a prospective, randomized, multi-center, multi-national trial designed to demonstrate safety and effectiveness of the GORE HELEX Septal Occluder for Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) closure in patients with history of cryptogenic stroke or imaging-confirmed Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). The unique study, which includes up to fifty investigational sites in the U.S., Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, is on track to meet its estimated completion in 2015.

Early knowledge of hepatocellular carcinoma response to transcatheter arterial chemoembolization is crucial for determining treatment success, timing of repeat treatment, and patient prognosis. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging is used 1-3 mo after treatment to evaluate anatomical tumor response, based upon changes in tumor size and contrast-agent enhancement. Alternatively, diffusion-weighted imaging can be used as a functional imaging technique to depict thermally induced motion of water molecules.

Cigarette smoking declines slowly among high school students: CDC survey

The latest survey of high school smoking rates, released today by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows that the nation continues to make gradual progress in reducing youth smoking, but declines have slowed significantly since 2003 and nearly one in five high school students still smoke.

Female mice that lack fucose mutarotase gene exhibit male-like sexual behavior

The mammalian fucose mutarotase enzyme is known to be involved in incorporating the sugar fucose into protein. Female mice that lack the fucose mutarotase (FucM) gene refuse to let males mount them, and will attempt copulation with other female mice. Researchers writing in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Genetics created the FucM mouse mutants in order to investigate the role of this enzyme in vivo.

Biologists discover new way to limit formation of teratomas

One of the characteristics of embryonic stem cells is their ability to form unusual tumors called teratomas. These tumors, which contain a mixture of cells from a variety of tissues and organs of the body, are typically benign. But they present a major obstacle to the development of human embryonic stem cell therapies that seek to treat a variety of human ailments such as Parkinson's, diabetes, genetic blood disorders and spinal cord injuries.

Tropical disease specialist Joseph Vinetz, MD, of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine will lead an ambitious multi-national effort to help control and eventually conquer malaria, establishing a new Peruvian/Brazilian International Center of Excellence in Malaria Research Center with a seven-year, $9.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.
