Abbott, Neurocrine enter collaboration to develop, commercialize elagolix for endometriosis-related pain

Abbott and Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a collaboration agreement to develop and commercialize elagolix for the treatment of endometriosis-related pain. Elagolix is a novel, first-in-class oral gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist, which has recently completed a phase IIb study in endometriosis. In addition to endometriosis, elagolix will be evaluated for the treatment of uterine fibroids.

KCI's Prevena Incision Management System receives FDA clearance

Kinetic Concepts, Inc. announced today it has received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration for the Prevena Incision Management System, a negative pressure wound therapy product designed for management of surgically closed incisions. KCI estimates more than three million procedures are performed each year worldwide that could benefit from treatment with the Prevena System, representing a potential global opportunity greater than $1 billion.

3 new genes in genetic research of suicidal behaviour

Three genes that have barely been studied to date have now provided fresh knowledge about patients with suicidal backgrounds. This is the result of a study by a team of Spanish researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital and Columbia University in the City of New York (United States), which found that several mutations are involved. This finding could help to develop future genetic tests to identify predisposition to suicide, without ignoring the importance of social and cultural factors.

Prevalence of GID in PD patients has impact on clinical and societal outcomes: Study

New data from a retrospective cohort study showed that up to three quarters of patients with Parkinson's disease developed gastrointestinal disorders that can have a substantial adverse effect on major PD-related clinical and health economic outcomes. These data were presented at the 14th International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders in Buenos Aires, Argentina (June 13-17, 2010).

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Florida State University is planning to build a state-of-the-art magnet system that will transform the study of complex environmental and biological samples. In its second national request for proposals, NTI seeks rigorous clinical studies, especially those addressing hemorrhage, intensive care, trauma systems or pre-hospital care.

ProBioGen AG announced today that Minapharm Pharmaceuticals, Cairo, has completed the acquisition of 95 % of the share capital of ProBioGen, an internationally renowned German cell line development and contract manufacturing specialist. The total purchase price of EUR 30.4 million includes earn-out payments which are conditional upon the achievement of defined milestones.

Norgine to develop and commercialize Tranzyme's ulimorelin ghrelin agonist

Tranzyme Pharma, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, and Norgine B.V., a European specialty pharmaceutical company, announced today that they have entered into a licensing agreement that provides Norgine with the exclusive rights to develop and commercialize Tranzyme's novel ghrelin agonist, ulimorelin (TZP-101), in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, South Africa and North Africa. Ulimorelin is entering Phase 3 development for the treatment of gastrointestinal dysmotility conditions in acute care settings.
