Dermatology researcher receives NIH grant to investigate role of nervous system in psoriasis

Dermatology researcher Nicole Ward, PhD, has earned her third National Institutes of Health grant in a year - including two that scored in the first percentile. With this most recent award, an R21, she will investigate the role the nervous system plays in psoriasis - an inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by raised areas of red, scaly, itchy and sometimes painful patches of skin.

African-American students exposed to lead three times more likely to be suspended than white students

Children who are exposed to lead are nearly three times more likely to be suspended from school by the 4th grade than children who are not exposed, according to a new University of Wisconsin-Madison study funded jointly by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Wisconsin Partnership Program Education and Research Committee.

Pre-doctoral students receive International Student Research Fellowships from HHMI

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has awarded two doctoral students from the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University with 2013 International Student Research Fellowships. Seblewongel Asrat, from Ethiopia, studies the bacterium that causes Legionnaires' disease while Jennifer Nwankwo, from Nigeria, studies red blood cell dehydration in sickle cell disease.

Scientists identify new therapeutic targets to inhibit progression of Alzheimer's disease

To stop the progression of Alzheimer's disease in the early stage, it is necessary to identify new therapeutic targets. Prof. Yunpeng Cao and team from the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University examined striatal-enriched phosphatase 61 expression in the brain tissues of Alzheimer's disease rats using in vivo and in vitro models, and analyzed the molecular mechanism by which striatal-enriched phosphatase 61 regulates N-methyl-D- aspartate receptor 2B transport.

In November 2010, an online gaming company called ActiVision released Call of Duty: Black Ops, a violent, first-person shooter game compatible with a variety of gaming devices. The video game sold 5.6 million copies within 24 hours of its release, and it earned a record-breaking $650 million in its first five days. Six weeks later, the game had exceeded $1 billion in sales.

Study: Type 2 diabetic patients treated with DPP-4 linagliptin experience reductions in blood glucose levels

Data published in The Lancet showed that elderly people with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) treated for 24 weeks with the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor linagliptin, marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company, experienced significant reductions in blood glucose levels (HbA1c) compared with those receiving placebo.
