1. James Street James Street United States says:

It is my hope that China can steer a middle course between corporate capitalism and totalitarian communism which, unfortunately are simply two aspects of the same thing.

Scientific research is, ideally, the search for truth using the tools of logic and experiment and is, almost literally, a free enterprise.  When we study biology we are not hampered by the need to pay royalties to the descendants of the men and women who discovered such things as the circulation of the blood, bacteria and viruses.

I could cite hundreds of simple substances, usually developed in universities, that are given patents and then sold for hundreds of times their actual cost.  For example, folinic acid, a simple folate analog, was derived from a naturally occurring vitamin, folic acid, given the name levoleucovorin and is sold for tens if not hundreds of times what it costs to produce, thus hindering future research and availability.

Without the free flow of knowledge all scientific research will slow to a crawl which is happening in the West because of the totalitarian nature of corporate capitalism.

China has created a window of opportunity for itself because it can allow sharing within its own political sphere even while it attempts to protect its hard-won knowledge from theft from foreign corporations.

There is no need to follow the recent model of the West even though there is certainly a need to protect knowledge from pirates.
China should return to the earlier, pre-World War II model of free scientific research while rigorously protecting its scientific knowledge from pirating Western corporations which will attempt to steal the knowledge and use patents to prevent free access.
The above sounds hopelessly idealistic to people who are convinced that greed is the only reliable motive for human progress.  The history of science and the scientists who discovered its laws, proves that wrong, from Newton to Einstein.
And by the way, thank you for the article
