However, this article seems rather insubstantial. It's mostly just quotes from this professor, with little substantiation behind them. I fear elements of this may be taken out of context or otherwise mentioned in an incomplete fashion. I'd like it if the authors had provided greater insight into the side effects of Melatonin, and critically analyse the professor's comments with regards to other published material on the subject.

This article seems like clickbait. A lot of speculation, very little substance.

Start with a very low dose and increase if regular sleep is not restored, 3mg or even less.Then discontinue if regular sleep patterns return. I have used it successfully. Take it in morning if problems getting to sleep, and at nights if waking through the night. Off label prescribing and using it in high doses as a tranquilizer is simply abusing it. It is a hormone i would never give it to growing children! I used it because it was a natural sleep aid. Did not as well think it was that good of article.

    Under doctor supervision I have given it to my daughter. The instructions were very clear. 1mg (they are hard to find but available with out having to cut pills.) 15 minutes before bedtime for no more then 5 days. Worked like a charm and I have used it a couple of times since. (all with consulting the doctor first)

      I also use it for my super high energy boys on days when they don't get enough exercise and are restless and can't fall asleep. I only use .75mg and only when it is hours past bedtime and they are still bouncing off the walls. Lack of sleep is also exponentially harmful to children and their growing minds, and that is proven.

  I think you're right about the article, it's weak. And I can tell you that the U.S. is NOT the only place where melatonin is unregulated. We have it in Canada sitting with all of the vitamins. Geez.
