Interesting study. My impression is that the MT generates a visual attention signal in response to motion detection. In normal subjects this is attenuated by frontal lobe mechanisms, probably at the superior colliculus.

The elderly and patients with depression or schizophrenia generally have poorly functioning frontal lobes, and so are unable to attenuate 'irrelevant background motion'. In that respect better than normal detection of background motion could well be clinically used as a quantitative confirmation of frontal lobe pathology.
