    POCD (postoperative cognitive dysfunction) is a recognized clinical phenomenon. According to a study, about 40% of all persons over age 60 who are hospitalized for surgery have POCD on discharge, and about 10% have POCD three months later.

    A point also worth mentioning is that anesthetic drugs play a role in the former figure (short term POCD), and in my opinion are likely to have affected the ICU patients as well.
