I've always known in my heart that a person has at least 5 minutes of consciousness left after their heart stops. i never thought it could go for hours after. I remember when my sister passed away. I knew her heart stopped, but i didn't tell anyone in the room. i wanted her to have peace and quite for her exit, not screams and crying sadness.  After 10 minutes i told my brother, then went to get the nurse to confirm it. I like the idea of having that quietness as you go from here to "their".
