Vagus Nerve Stimulation shows great promise in treating tinnitus. However, it is still in the early stages of development and it will likely be some time before it is available as a standard therapy. In the case of cochlear implants, it took 10 years after the devices were initially conceived for bioengineering development to refine them to today's standards.

There are also significant, though not life threatening, side-effects to the therapy. Sleep apnea occurs frequently. Other side-effects include alteration of the voice, coughing, throat inflammation and pain and hoarseness. These should become manageable as more is known.
