OXiGENE reports positive final data from Phase 1 study of OXi4503 in patients with solid tumors

OXiGENE, Inc., a clinical-stage, biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapeutics to treat cancer and eye diseases, announced today that in collaboration with OXiGENE, Professor Gordon Rustin and colleagues from the Mount Vernon Cancer Research Centre, UK and other institutions in the United Kingdom, reported positive final data from an investigator-sponsored Phase 1 study of OXi4503 in patients with solid tumors.

BioSante's GVAX CML Vaccine granted FDA Orphan Drug designation

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the receipt of Orphan Drug designation for GVAX CML Vaccine in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) from the FDA's Office of Orphan Products Development. Orphan drug designation, as granted by the U.S. Orphan Drug Act, is for a product to treat a rare disease or condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people in the U.S. Orphan drug designation qualifies the sponsor of the product for tax credits and seven years of marketing exclusivity, among other benefits.

Ranibizumab improves vision in patients with visual impairment due to DME: RESTORE study

Results from a new major diabetes eye health study may have the potential to change the way vision loss due to diabetic macular edema, a serious and devastating complication of diabetes, is treated. One year results from the RESTORE study show that 37 per cent of patients treated with ranibizumab only and 43 per cent of those treated with ranibizumab plus laser therapy, had a significant improvement in visual acuity of 10 letters or more on an eye chart, compared to 16 per cent of patients treated with laser alone - the current standard treatment for visual impairment due to DME.

Genentech reports results from Phase III study of Avastin in women with advanced ovarian cancer

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, today announced results from a Phase III study of Avastin (bevacizumab) that showed women with previously untreated advanced ovarian cancer who received Avastin in combination with chemotherapy, followed by the continuation of Avastin alone, had a 39 percent improvement in the likelihood of living longer without the disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS) compared to chemotherapy alone.

Novartis' Afinitor decreases size of SEGAs associated with tuberous sclerosis

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation announced today that results from a Phase II study show Afinitor® (everolimus) tablets is the first medication in a clinical trial to decrease the size of subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGAs), benign brain tumors associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS). In this study of 28 patients presented today at the 46th American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in Chicago, 75% of patients experienced a reduction of 30% or greater in the size of their brain tumors from baseline to six months (p<0.001).

AMG 386 demonstrates antitumor activity in Phase 2 trial involving patients with recurrent ovarian cancer

Amgen today announced that AMG 386, combined with paclitaxel, demonstrated antitumor activity in a randomized Phase 2 trial involving 161 patients with recurrent ovarian cancer. Genta reports combined data from Genasense Phase 3 trials for advanced melanoma

Genta Incorporated announced today the presentation of combined data on early endpoints from the Company's randomized Phase 3 trials of Genasense® (oblimersen sodium) Injection plus chemotherapy in patients with advanced melanoma. Bevacizumab extends progression-free survival in women with advanced ovarian cancer

Newly reported results from a major clinical trial show that adding bevacizumab (Avastin) to standard frontline chemotherapy for women with advanced ovarian cancer and then continuing a maintenance dose of the drug afterwards significantly extends progression-free survival. Women receiving the new treatment regimen saw no worsening of their disease for 14.1 months, compared to 10.3 months for women receiving standard therapy.

Chemotherapy delivered directly into liver blood vessels increases progression-free survival in melanoma patients

Patients undergoing treatment for melanoma that has spread to the liver may respond well to chemotherapy delivered directly into the liver's blood vessels, according to a study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and Delcath Systems Inc., and led by James F. Pingpank, M.D., associate professor of surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and surgical oncologist with UPMC Cancer Centers. The results will be disclosed in an oral presentation on June 5 in Chicago at the 46th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Bisphosphonates may cause poorer survival rate in women with early stage breast cancer: Study

Scientists from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit presented preliminary data that shows nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates, therapeutic agents used to promote bone health and inhibit resorption, may cause a slightly poorer survival rate in post-menopausal women with early stage breast cancer who take them for their anti-osteoporosis properties.

Exelixis, Inc. today reported updated interim data from three ongoing trials of XL765 (SAR245409), an orally available small molecule inhibitor of phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) and mTOR. Ipilimumab extends survival of metastatic melanoma patients: Study

A therapy that multiplies the effect of a natural disease-fighting antibody has extended the lives of patients with metastatic melanoma in a large, international clinical trial. The study's researchers will report their findings simultaneously at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in Chicago and in the New England Journal of Medicine.
