DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. Nearly every cell in a person’s body has the same DNA. Most DNA is located in the cell nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA).

Clinical performance data of Cervista HPV HR presented at International Papillomavirus Conference

Hologic, Inc., a leading women's healthcare company, today announced that final data analysis from the first large-scale independent evaluation of clinical performance of Cervista HPV HR compared to Hybrid Capture 2, were presented in Montreal, Canada, at the 26th International Papillomavirus Conference. Cervista HPV HR is a diagnostic test for the detection of 14 high-risk human papillomavirus types.

Olaparib shows promising results against inherited forms of breast and ovarian cancer

Olaparib, a new type of experimental drug called a PARP inhibitor, has shown promising results against inherited forms of breast and ovarian cancer in two small clinical trials led by scientists at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Unit at King's College London.

Teenage Cancer Trust: 26 % of young people plan to get sunburnt on purpose

More than a quarter of teenagers will get sunburnt on purpose this summer in the belief that they will ultimately get a suntan, a survey has found. The Teenage Cancer Trust discovered that 26 per cent of young people, aged 13 to 19, plan to get sunburnt on purpose this year.

Slow rate of living and reduced energy metabolism is sufficient to increase longevity: Study

Don't put down the red wine and vitamins just yet, but if you're taking antioxidants because you hope to live longer, consider this: a new study published in the June 2010 issue of the journal GENETICS casts doubt on the theory that oxidative stress to our tissues shortens lifespan. That's because researchers from McGill University in Canada have identified mutations in 10 different genes of worms (genes believed to have counterparts in humans) that extend their lifespan without reducing the level of oxidative stress the worms suffer.

QIAGEN receives CE conformity marking for careHPV Test

QIAGEN has completed European certification of its careHPV™ Test to bring human papillomavirus (HPV) testing to public-health programs in low-resource, developing countries, the company announced today at the International Papillomavirus Conference in Montreal, Canada. The CE conformity marking ("Conformite Europeenne") certifies that the careHPV Test has met European Union consumer safety and health requirements, allowing the test to be distributed in developing countries that recognize the CE mark.

Scientists discover nanoparticle to deliver DNA with minimum toxic effect

In lab experiments, the researchers have found that this device, a vector, is able to deliver DNA deeply enough into a cell to allow genetic material to be activated - a critical step in gene therapy. This vector is between 2 - and 10 times more effective than other experimental materials, according to the research.

Adeona Pharmaceuticals, Inc., announced today that on July 6, 2010, it completed an equity financing of $1 million with a single institutional investor, Seaside 88, L.P. The financing involved the sale of 1,212,121 registered shares of common stock and no warrants. Enclave Capital served as placement agent and will receive a 7% cash commission and 5-year warrants to acquire 60,606 shares of Adeona at $1.32 per share.
