New study on impact of bortezomib on mantle cell lymphoma

A new study by researchers from the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center sheds light on how bortezomib (VELCADE-), the first in a new class of cancer drugs known as proteasome inhibitors, works in mantle cell lymphoma. The study also provides preliminary evidence for which patients might benefit most from bortezomib.

New study shows SAVI radiation therapy controls rate of breast cancer

A new study of breast cancer patients at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center and the Arizona Oncology Services shows that after almost two years, the radiation given with the Strut-Adjusted Volume Implant controls the rate of cancer and may reduce the complications seen with alternate types of brachytherapy.

Co-morbidities, socioeconomic status impact survival rates in colorectal cancer

Blacks are surviving colorectal cancer at a significantly lower rate compared to whites and Asians due to co-morbidities and their socioeconomic status, according to research by epidemiologists at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Preclinical results of TH-302 presented at AACR Translational Cancer Medicine Meeting

Threshold Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced two preclinical presentations on its clinical stage hypoxia-activated prodrug, TH-302, at the American Association for Cancer Research Translational Cancer Medicine Meeting, being held July 11 to 14, 2010, in San Francisco, CA. The preclinical presentations describe new findings regarding the efficacy of TH-302 when combined with multi-kinase inhibitors that inhibit VEGF signaling, as well as the efficacy of TH-302 in combination with gemcitabine in models of pancreatic cancer.

OvaGene Oncology completes license agreements with key Norwegian cancer researchers

OvaGene Oncology Inc., a biotechnology company specializing in the development and commercialization of personalized DNA-based diagnostics for gynecologic cancer, announced today that it has completed license agreements with key Norwegian cancer researchers. Bedford Laboratories™, a division of Ben Venue Laboratories, Inc., is pleased to announce the addition of Dactinomycin for Injection USP 500 mcg (0.5 mg) to its comprehensive line of generic oncology products. Dactinomycin was approved earlier this year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is AP rated and equivalent to Cosmegen® by Lundbeck Inc. Each single dose vial contains 0.5 mg (500mcg) of dactinomycin and 20 mg of mannitol and is individually boxed.

Novelos reports positive results from NOV-002 Phase 2 neoadjuvant breast cancer trial

Novelos Therapeutics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing therapeutics to treat cancer and hepatitis, today announced positive results in a Phase 2 trial of NOV-002 in combination with neoadjuvant chemotherapy treatment in patients with stage IIB-IIIC HER-2/neu negative invasive breast cancer, conducted by the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Skandion Clinic selects IBA for installation of particle therapy facility

IBA (Ion Beam Applications S.A.) announced that Skandion Clinic, the clinical centre for proton therapy in Sweden, has selected IBA for the installation of a particle therapy facility. Early knowledge of HCC response to TACE determines treatment success: Research article

Early knowledge of hepatocellular carcinoma response to transcatheter arterial chemoembolization is crucial for determining treatment success, timing of repeat treatment, and patient prognosis. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging is used 1-3 mo after treatment to evaluate anatomical tumor response, based upon changes in tumor size and contrast-agent enhancement. Alternatively, diffusion-weighted imaging can be used as a functional imaging technique to depict thermally induced motion of water molecules.

Study finds EUS associated with improved outcomes in patients with localized pancreatic cancer

A new study has found that endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is associated with improved outcomes in patients with localized pancreatic cancer, possibly due to the detection of earlier cancers and improved stage-appropriate management, including more selective performance of curative intent surgery. This is the first study to analyze a large population-based cancer registry and demonstrate that EUS evaluation is associated with improved pancreatic cancer survival.

Calithera Biosciences completes Series A financing totaling $40M

Calithera Biosciences, a company developing novel oncology therapeutics, today announced the completion of a Series A financing totaling $40 million. Morgenthaler Ventures led the financing with U.S. Venture Partners, Advanced Technology Ventures, Delphi Ventures and Mission Bay Capital also participating in the round. The capital will be used to support the company's pioneering efforts to develop activators of caspases, the proteases that promote apoptotic cell death, for the treatment of cancer and other proliferative diseases.

Optics Express publishes special focus issue on lung cancer imaging research

Advanced imaging technologies that promise to improve the development of effective drugs to treat lung cancer are the focus of the current special issue of Optics Express, an open-access journal published by the Optical Society (OSA). Research featured in the special focus issue on Imaging in Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer outlines standardized approaches to measure and compare tumor size, as well as to validate the accuracy of such measurements under defined settings.
