Predictive biomarker for patients with NSCLC

The era of one-size-fits-all medicine will eventually be history; after all it is no news that drugs and treatments do not work the same for everyone. For patients with nonsmall cell lung cancer, a lung cancer that kills approximately 1 million people annually, the treatment currently available is basically the same for all patients, despite the fact that some patients may respond to treatment while others may not.

Roche, ATCC partner to research real-time endogenous GPCR function with xCELLigence System

G-coupled protein receptors (GPCRs), also known as 7-transmembrane proteins, constitute the single largest class of therapeutic targets for clinical and investigational drugs. There are ~800 predicted members of this class in the human genome, involved in diverse signaling pathways in a wide array of cells and tissue types. Modulation of GPCR function has proven to have therapeutic benefit in a wide variety of diseases in immunology, neurology, cardiology, and oncology.

TQ can suppress growth of aggressive PCa cell lines: Researchers

Researchers at the Tulane University School of Medicine, in New Orleans, LA, have demonstrated that thymoquinone a major component of black seed oil (Nigella sativa) can suppress the growth of several aggressive prostate cancer cell lines, in vitro. Although previous studies have shown the anti-proliferative effects of TQ in different types of cancers, the molecular mechanism of this effect of TQ had not been delineated.

Targeted monoclonal antibodies show promise for pancreatic and metastatic breast cancer

Early trials using targeted monoclonal antibodies in combination with existing therapies show promise in treating pancreatic cancer and metastatic breast cancer, according to research that will be presented by investigators from the University of Pennsylvania's Abramson Cancer Center at the 2010 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology June 4 through 8.

Results from AMRI's on-going Phase I clinical study of ALB 109564(a) published online

AMRI announced today that on-going results from its Phase I clinical study on its novel tubulin inhibitor, ALB 109564(a), were published on the website of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (abstract.asco.org/alb). These results indicate that ALB 109564(a) is well tolerated at the doses tested and shows preliminary evidence of clinical activity in disease types not typically treated with approved vinca alkaloids.

New technique transforms iPS cells into natural tumor killers

Urologists treating patients with suspicious ureteral or kidney lesions now have a tool to help them more effectively make diagnoses. Cook Medical has introduced the BIGopsy Backloading Biopsy Forceps, a device designed and engineered to obtain large renal or ureteral tissue specimens up to 4 mm3 for cancer diagnosis. The larger sample size helps produce biopsy results without the need for repeat tissue-sampling procedures associated with other biopsy devices.

Major response to preoperative therapy increases survival in pancreatic cancer patients

Cancer of the pancreas--a glandular organ that lies behind the stomach and secretes vital enzymes and hormones--seldom is detected in early stages, making treatment difficult and survival statistics particularly grim. However, new research from Fox Chase Cancer Center finds that patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma whose tumors respond most to preoperative chemotherapy and radiation survive four times as long, on average, as those whose tumors respond least.

Women who undergo bilateral oophorectomy tend to have smaller tumors

More than half a million women in the United States undergo a hysterectomy each year and approximately half of those surgeries include removal of the ovaries. Researchers know that removing a woman's ovaries is associated with a reduction in the risk of developing breast cancer, but it has not been clear whether those cancers that do arise in these women differ from breast cancers in the general population.

Patients with stage IIIA NSCLC who receive lobectomy have increased overall survival: Research

There's debate about the best treatment approach for patients with certain stages of non-small cell lung cancer, which accounts for about 80 percent of all lung cancers. Patients with early stages of NSCLC are typically treated with surgery, but those with stage IIIA present more of a challenge because they are such a diverse group.
