Studies offer new insight into diverticulosis

Diverticulosis, a condition that develops when pouches form in the wall of the colon, is increasing in frequency. It affects the majority of those reaching the age of 80 - a growing portion of the population - and imposes a substantial burden on health-care resources, but curiously there is a lack of data and unanswered questions around this condition.

AGA guidelines recommend anti-TNF-α biologic agents to induce remission in Crohn's disease patients

The anti-TNF-α biologic agents, such as infliximab or adalimumab, are recommended to induce remission in patients with moderately severe Crohn's disease , according to a new guideline from the American Gastroenterological Association. Additionally, the guidelines recommend against using thiopurines or methotrexate alone to induce remission in these patients. The new guideline and accompanying technical review have been published in Gastroenterology, the official journal of the AGA Institute.

Norgine signs exclusive licensing agreement with Innovacell for ICEF15

Norgine B.V. and Innovacell today announced they have entered into an exclusive licensing agreement for Europe, SADAC and MENA for ICEF15. Innovacell and Norgine will co-develop ICEF15 and Norgine will commercialise the product. The start of the ICEF15 phase IIb clinical trial is imminent and it is anticipated that the first patient will be dosed in Q1 2014.

Research roundup: Long-term care use varies dramatically by state; health spending slowdown explained

In 2012, about 58,500 paid, regulated long-term care services providers served about 8 million people in the United States. Long-term care services were provided by 4,800 adult day services centers, 12,200 home health agencies, 3,700 hospices, 15,700 nursing homes, and 22,200 assisted living and similar residential care communities. Each day in 2012, there were 273,200 participants enrolled in adult day services centers, 1,383,700 residents in nursing homes, and 713,300 residents in residential care communities; in 2011, about 4,742,500 patients received services from home health agencies, and 1,244,500 patients received services from hospices. Provider sectors differed in ownership, and average size and supply varied by region (Harris-Kojetin et al., 12/12).

Brazilian study provides evidence to support effectiveness of Tecta in erosive GERD

Takeda Pharmaceuticals International GmbH announced today results showing pantoprazole magnesium 40 mg (Tecta) was as effective as esomeprazole 40 mg for achieving complete remission (defined as combined endoscopic healing and symptomatic relief) and the mucosal healing rate was high, whilst providing significantly higher symptom relief after 8 weeks.

Cook Medical begins clinical study to evaluate removability of Evolution Esophageal Fully Covered Stent

Cook Medical has initiated a clinical study in the U.S. to evaluate the removability of a new Evolution Esophageal Fully Covered Stent. This is the first multicenter U.S. study to evaluate the possibility of removing a self-expanding metal stent after malignant and benign strictures have been treated. The stent design used in the study has been modified to accommodate retrieval.

Scientists at the Institute for Genome Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and physicians at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, MD, have found that restoring the normal, helpful bacteria of the gut and intestines may treat patients suffering from recurrent Clostridium difficile infections.
