Pevion Biotech to present positive results of PEV4 RSV vaccine candidate at Vaccine Innovation Meeting

Pevion Biotech, the Swiss vaccine company, today announced that it has successfully completed the preclinical safety and efficacy studies of its RSV vaccine candidate PEV4. The vaccine candidate is a modern subunit vaccine candidate against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is based on a recombinant RSV-F protein formulated with Pevion Biotech's proprietary and market-validated virosome technology platform.

Nycomed, Merck enter co-promotion agreement for Daxas in Canada and Europe

Nycomed and Merck & Co., Inc. (based in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey and known as MSD outside the USA and Canada) today announced that they have entered into a co-promotion agreement for Canada and certain European countries for the commercialization of Daxas® (roflumilast), an investigational once-daily tablet for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In addition, the two companies have signed an exclusive distribution agreement for the commercialization of Daxas® in the United Kingdom.

Children born very early have abnormal lung function: U.K. researchers

More than half of children who were born very early—at 25 weeks or less (normal gestation is around 40 weeks)— have abnormal lung function and are twice as likely as their full-term peers to have a diagnosis of asthma, according to U.K. researchers, who followed a national cohort of extremely preterm infants to age 11.

Early tracheotomy does not reduce risk of VAP in mechanically ventilated adult ICU patients

Adult ICU patients who received tracheotomy 6 to 8 days vs. 13 to 15 days after mechanical ventilation did not have a significant reduction in the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia, according to a study in the April 21 issue of JAMA.

Pregnant women face increased risk of death from H1N1; early antiviral treatment associated with fewer complications

Pregnant women had a disproportionately higher risk of death due to 2009 influenza A(H1N1) in the U.S., and early antiviral treatment appeared to be associated with fewer admissions to an ICU and fewer deaths, according to a study in the April 21 issue of JAMA.

Meridian Bioscience's second-quarter net sales down 6% to $31.1M

Net sales for the second quarter of fiscal 2010 were $31,147,000 as compared to $33,280,000 for the same period of the prior fiscal year, a decrease of 6%. Net earnings for the second quarter of fiscal 2010 were $5,980,000 or $0.15 per diluted share, decreases of 18% and 17%, respectively, compared to the second quarter of fiscal 2009. Diluted common shares outstanding for fiscal 2010 and 2009 were 41,177,000 and 41,133,000, respectively.

Hospira enters definitive merger agreement to acquire Javelin Pharmaceuticals for $145M

Hospira, Inc., a global specialty pharmaceutical and medication delivery company, and Javelin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced that the companies have entered into a definitive merger agreement providing for the acquisition of Javelin by Hospira for $2.20 per share in cash, or approximately $145 million. Hospira expects to commence a tender offer for all outstanding shares of Javelin common stock on or about April 21, 2010, in accordance with the terms of the merger agreement.
