Heart valve transplant through leg quicker and benefits high risk cases

The breakthrough technology could save the lives of thousands of people with heart valve disease who have no other treatment options. In a new clinical trial the first U.S. patient has received a heart valve implant without open-heart surgery.

Drug combo gives lung cancer patients longer life

Preliminary results from a large randomized clinical trial, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), by a network of researchers led by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group. Genentech, Inc., have shown that patients with previously untreated advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer who received bevacizumab (Avastin) in combination with standard chemotherapy lived longer than patients who received the same chemotherapy without bevacizumab.

Study indicates that vitamin E does not prevent cancer

Patients who took vitamin E supplements for about 7 years did not have their risk of cancer or cardiovascular events significantly reduced, and in fact some had an increased risk of heart failure, according to a study in the March 16 issue of JAMA.
