Positive data from Onconova Therapeutics' ON 01910.Na trial for advanced MDS

Onconova Therapeutics, Inc. today announced promising results from two clinical trials in patients with advanced Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) treated with ON 01910.Na. These trials are being conducted at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in Bethesda, MD, and St. Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York.

Discovery may lead to new treatments for late-stage breast cancer

Researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine and colleagues at the University of Texas Southwestern and Case Western University have determined how the protein Mdm2, which is elevated in late-stage cancers, disables genes that suppress the growth of tumors. The finding may lead to the development of new drugs for late stage breast cancer and other difficult to treat malignancies.

Gene positions may offer a new method of cancer diagnosis

Certain genes switch their nuclear position in tumor cells, offering a potential new method of diagnosing cancer, say researchers from the National Cancer Institute. The study by Meaburn et al. will be published online December 7, 2009 (www.jcb.org) and in the December 14, 2009 print issue of the Journal of Cell Biology (JCB).

ImmunoGen's SAR3419 holds hope for B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

ImmunoGen, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company that develops targeted anticancer therapeutics, today announced the presentation of encouraging initial clinical findings with SAR3419 at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) 51st Annual Meeting and Exposition. Among the findings reported were responses to SAR3419 – administered as a single agent – among patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that is refractory to treatment with rituximab (Rituxan®).

Study: Genetic variations in miRNA pathway may be used to predict secondary tumor in head and neck cancer patients

Eighteen single-point genetic variations indicate risk of recurrence for early-stage head and neck cancer patients and their likelihood of developing a second type of cancer, researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center reported at the American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference.
