Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of all cancer deaths in the United States and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in individuals ages 40 to 60. Approximately 37,000 Americans are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year, and, each year, approximately the same number die from it. Often, pancreatic cancer is found too late for surgical intervention, and chemotherapy and radiation treatments have little effect.

NeoPharm commences enrollment in Phase II clinical trial of LE-DT for pancreatic cancer

NeoPharm, Inc., announced today that it has started enrolling patients in its Phase II clinical trial for liposome entrapped docetaxel (LE-DT), as a frontline treatment of pancreatic cancer patients with locally advanced or metastatic disease. LE-DT is a novel, proprietary liposomal delivery system of docetaxel, the active ingredient of Taxotere®.

Researchers use genistein to improve outlook of pancreatic cancer

Scientists at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit today presented data at the American Association for Cancer Research's 101st Annual Meeting 2010 that shows when genistein, a component of soy, is paired with the FDA-approved drug oxaliplatin, pancreatic cancer cells become more sensitive to chemotherapy.

Prognosis for IPMN depends on presence of extra-pancreatic cancer: Research

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas shows a wide spectrum of histological presentations, ranging from adenoma with mild atypia to adenocarcinoma. In general, branch duct IPMN develops slowly and has a comparatively good prognosis. However, in several studies, it became evident that IPMN is a disease that very frequently coexists with cancer.

Positive data from NewLink Genetics Phase1/2 study of HyperAcute-Lung cancer immunotherapy

NewLink Genetics Corporation announced today data from a Phase 1/2 study showing that patients with progressive advanced non-small cell lung cancer treated with its HyperAcute®-Lung cancer immunotherapy experienced favorable median survival. IGF-IR plays role in proliferation and motility of pancreatic cancer cell lines: Research

Insulin-like growth factor-I is upregulated in human pancreatic cancer tissues but is not expressed in surrounding non-cancerous tissues. Serum level of IGF-I is elevated in pancreatic cancer patients. Histological analysis has shown that IGF-I receptor is positive in the membrane of pancreatic cancer tissues.

Genentech's Tarceva receives FDA approval as maintenance therapy for advanced NSCLC

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the daily pill Tarceva® (erlotinib) as a maintenance treatment for patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose disease has not progressed after four cycles of platinum-based first-line chemotherapy.

Australian scientists sequence genome of pancreatic cancer

The International Cancer Genome Consortium which includes researchers from 22 countries is mapping the genomes of different types of cancers. A genome is essentially a blueprint of a human’s DNA. The genetic data of each individual is different and so is the genetic data of the cancer in the individual. The Australian scientists are sequencing the genomes of people suffering from pancreatic cancer.
