Mayo Clinic opens new C. difficile Clinic at Rochester campus

Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) has reached an epidemic state and is the most common infectious cause of diarrhea in hospitals. Health care providers are seeing increased severity and recurrence rates of the infection. In response, Mayo Clinic has opened a C. difficile Clinic at the Rochester campus.

Minority children with autism less likely to have received subspecialty care or procedures, study finds

A study from investigators at MassGeneral Hospital for Children found that African-American or Hispanic children diagnosed with autism were significantly less likely than white children to have received subspecialty care or procedures related to conditions that often accompany autism spectrum disorders.

Almirall, S.A. (ALM:MC) and Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: IRWD) announced the launch of Constella® (linaclotide 290mcg capsules once daily), the first approved prescription therapy in a new class of treatments for adults suffering from moderate to severe IBS-C,(1) in Europe. Constella® is now available in Germany, the UK and Nordic countries and is expected to be launched in several other European countries in 2013.

Current celiac disease screening method more cost-effective than universal screening, study finds

The current standard practice of screening adolescents who are either symptomatic or at high-risk for celiac disease proves to be more cost-effective than universal screening. Additionally, the strategy is successful in preventing bone loss and fractures in celiac patients, according to a new study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the official clinical practice journal of the American Gastroenterological Association.

CREON Delayed-Release Capsules now available in US for patients with EPI

AbbVie announced that a new, higher-dose capsule of CREON (pancrelipase) Delayed-Release Capsules is commercially available in the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved CREON in a 36,000 lipase-unit dose to treat patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency due to cystic fibrosis, swelling of the pancreas that lasts a long time (chronic pancreatitis), removal of some or all of the pancreas (pancreatectomy), or other conditions.

UCLA researchers show that bacteria ingested in food can affect brain function

UCLA researchers now have the first evidence that bacteria ingested in food can affect brain function in humans. In an early proof-of-concept study of healthy women, they found that women who regularly consumed beneficial bacteria known as probiotics through yogurt showed altered brain function, both while in a resting state and in response to an emotion-recognition task.

Australia's PBAC recommends use of XIFAXAN 550 mg for hepatic encephalopathy

Norgine today announced that the Australian assessment body the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee has recommended the use of XIFAXAN 550 mg in the prevention of the recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy where other treatments have failed or are contraindicated; a potentially life-threatening neuropsychiatric condition associated with liver disease.

Immune system attacks beneficial bacteria in several chronic human diseases

The human gut is loaded with commensal bacteria - "good" microbes that, among other functions, help the body digest food. The gastrointestinal tract contains literally trillions of such cells, and yet the immune system seemingly turns a blind eye. However, in several chronic human diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, HIV/AIDS, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, the immune system attacks these normally beneficial bacteria, resulting in chronic inflammation and contributing to disease progression.
