Repligen reports positive results from RG1068 Phase 3 study to improve MRI of the pancreas

Repligen Corporation reported today positive top-line results from a Phase 3 study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of RG1068, synthetic human secretin, to improve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pancreas in patients with pancreatic disease using endoscopy (ERCP) as a diagnostic reference.

Medtronic launches Contour 3D Annuloplasty Ring for treatment of tricuspid valve disease

Medtronic, Inc. today announced the global launch of a new tricuspid ring for the treatment of tricuspid valve disease. Called the Contour 3D™ Annuloplasty Ring, the device is designed to restore normal valve function by remodeling the natural valve's shape and size. The Contour 3D Ring is approved for use in the U.S., Europe and several other countries.

Transcept initiates enrollment in TO-2061 Phase 2 study for treatment resistant obsessive compulsive disorder

Transcept Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the first patient has been enrolled in a Phase 2 clinical study to evaluate TO-2061 as an adjunctive treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in patients who have responded inadequately to currently approved treatments. OCD affects 1 to 2 percent of the United States adult population and can significantly impair the lives of patients and their families.

Surgeons deliver virtual temporal bone dissection course for otolaryngology residents, physicians

Two surgeons from Central Ohio recently traveled to Nicaragua on a humanitarian mission to treat children with serious ear, nose and throat conditions. However, this year they brought along some help in the form of high-tech equipment designed to appeal to a generation that grew up playing video games - not to entertain the children, but to train the local doctors and medical students.

Surgeons use stem cell technology for bone grafts to treat foot, ankle conditions

When patients need a bone graft for a foot or ankle surgery, bone often is taken from another part of their body. Now surgeons are using new methods to get bone material and even stem cells right "off the shelf," according to Glenn M. Weinraub, DPM, FACFAS, a California foot and ankle surgeon who is leading a discussion among surgeons on the next decade of bone healing at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons' Annual Scientific Conference in Fort Lauderdale.

Women with ductal carcinoma in situ-DCIS-who later develop invasive breast cancer in the same breast are at higher risk of dying from breast cancer than those who do not develop invasive disease, according to a study published online March 11 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Majority of men on ADT after prostatectomy gain weight during first year of therapy

Seventy per cent of men who received androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) after surgery to remove their prostate gland gained significant weight in the first year, putting on an average of 4.2kg, according to a paper in the March issue of the urology journal BJUI.

Surgical robot acquisition increases rate of surgery to treat prostate cancer

A new study conducted by researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center and Yale School of Medicine shows that when hospitals acquire surgical robotic technology, men in that region are more likely to have prostate cancer surgery. The study, "The Association between Diffusion of the Surgical Robot and Radical Prostatectomy Rates", was published this week in the online edition of the journal Medical Care.
