Lymph node dissection may not be necessary for localized non-small cell lung cancers

Lymph node dissection, the current standard surgical treatment for localized non-small cell lung cancers, may be unnecessary in certain screen-detected early stage cases , according to a study published in the March issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology (JTO), the official journal of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.

Aggressive treatment of T3 and T4 NSCLC with induction chemoradiotherapy may improve survival

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have found that patients with node negative T3 and T4 non-small lung cancer who underwent chemotherapy before surgery had more than three times the survival rate than patients who only underwent surgery. These findings currently appear on-line in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

New process automatically ensures optimum tension for sutures in minimally invasive surgeries

More and more often, abdominal surgeries are being carried out in a minimally invasive manner. A small incision in the abdominal wall is sufficient for the surgeon to be able to insert the instrument and make the organs visible with an endoscope. This technique is gentler and does not stress the body as much as traditional surgeries do.

Exactech fourth quarter total revenue increases 7% to $51.8 million

Exactech, Inc., a developer and producer of bone and joint restoration products for hip, knee, extremities, spine and biologic materials, announced today that revenue for 2010 increased 7% to $190.5 million from $177.3 million in 2009. Diluted earnings per share for the year was $0.80 based on net income of $10.5 million.

Survey: 65% of patients in hospitals experience pain prevalence

Nearly two-thirds of the hospital in-patients who took part in a survey had experienced pain in the last 24 hours and 42% of those rated their pain as more than seven out of ten, where ten was the worst pain imaginable, according to the March issue of the Journal of Clinical Nursing.

Kidney transplant proposal - younger patients greater success

Soon kidney transplant recipients would be younger under a proposal being considered by the nation’s organ transplant network. This would replace the current ‘first-come-first-served’ system and is intended to provide better matches between the life expectancies of recipients and the functional life of donated kidneys.

Medtronic acquires chitosan-dextran gel technology for use in functional endoscopic sinus surgery

Medtronic, Inc. today announced that it has completed the purchase of rights to a chitosan-dextran gel technology from Adelaide Research & Innovation Pty Ltd. in Australia, Robinson Squidgel Ltd., and Otago Innovation Ltd. in New Zealand. Medtronic is acquiring this technology for potential use in developing future products for functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS).

U.S.-Chile collaborate to study new long-acting local anesthetic derived from algae

A U.S.-Chile collaboration is bringing surgical patients closer to having a long-acting local anesthetic. In a randomized, double-blind trial, patients given neosaxitoxin, a new local anesthetic derived from algae, had significantly less postoperative pain and recovered about two days sooner than those given the commonly used local anesthetic bupivacaine.
