Study suggests thigh-length surgical stockings can reduce deep vein thrombosis

Treating hospital patients with thigh-length surgical stockings, rather than knee-high socks, can reduce life threatening blood clots, a new study suggests. Researchers found that knee-high stockings, which are similar to flight socks, do little in stroke patients to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a life threatening form of blood clot that can travel up into the heart and lungs,

LA surgeon develops minimally invasive approach to remove pineal tumors

One of the most difficult-to-remove tumors located deep in the midbrain area can now be safely excised thanks to the work of one Los Angeles surgeon. Hrayr Shahinian, M.D., medical director of The Skull Base Institute in Los Angeles, has developed a minimally invasive approach to removing pineal tumors so called as they are shaped like pine cones.

National Science Foundation awards UofL researcher $500,000 for nervous system study

Michal Hetman, MD, PhD, associate professor and endowed chair in molecular signaling in the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center and the UofL Department of Neurological Surgery, has received a three-year, $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to fund a project that will aim to explain how the nervous system grows and develops.

AB5000 VADs can restore normal hemodynamics in AMI cardiogenic shock patients: Report

Results from the U.S. registry of Abiomed, Inc. AB5000 patients were recently published in the September 2010 issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. The paper, "Use of the AB5000TM Ventricular Assist Device in Cardiogenic Shock After Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI)," concludes that the "results from this nationwide registry suggest that VADs can restore normal hemodynamics and support recovery of native cardiac function in the majority of survivors when conventional therapies fail."

Bariatric surgery rates rise among adolescents

According to recent surveys more and more adolescents need bariatric surgery for morbid obesity. This procedure was earlier reserved only for adults. Researchers say that from 2005 to 2007, the rate of gastric banding has jumped nearly seven-fold among youths aged 13 to 20. The process involves placement of a band around the upper part of the stomach using a laparoscope. The study appeared in the journal Pediatrics.

Scientists develop microscopic gas-filled spheres of silica to locate breast cancers

A new material could help surgeons more accurately locate breast cancers, reduce the need for second surgeries and minimize pre-surgical discomfort for patients. Microscopic gas-filled spheres of silica, a porous glass, can mark the location of early-stage tumors to show their position using ultrasound imaging in the operating room.

Male circumcision shown to help prevent HIV transmission

According to a new study published in the Medical Journal of Australia, male circumcision can be seen as a “surgical vaccine” in the fight against heterosexual HIV transmission. The study based on spread of the virus in Africa showed that there was a reduced rate of transmission in regions where male circumcision was the norm.

Report: There’s nothing wrong with cosmetic surgery but beware of specialist qualifications

The report, released by the UK’s National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD), warns patients that cosmetic surgery has not yet been recognised as a medical specialty and they should not rely on the recognised specialist qualifications of practitioners who perform cosmetic procedures.
