ImmunoCellular Therapeutics updates accomplishments in Letter to Shareholders

As the summer comes to a close, I wanted to update you on the Company's accomplishments this year, which set the stage for an exciting fall. The first eight months of the year have been very successful, with the Company attaining many of its goals, despite a very difficult economic environment, which has created challenges for many small biotechnology companies. Today, IMUC is in its best financial position ever and well positioned to validate the success it achieved in a Phase I trial for ICT-107, its dendritic cell-based cancer vaccine product candidate.

Preventive surgery protects against breast, ovarian cancer in women carrying BRCA1, BRCA2 gene mutations

Women who have gene mutations that put them at high risk of ovarian and breast cancer can significantly reduce the risk of developing or dying from these cancers by having their healthy ovaries or breasts removed, according to a new study reported in the Sept. 1 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

European Menopause and Andropause Society's position statements on post-reproductive health of women

Elsevier announced today the publication of four important position statements from the European Menopause and Andropause Society (EMAS) in the journal Maturitas on common management problems in the post-reproductive health of women. The statements cover the management of the menopause in the context of obesity, epilepsy, endometriosis and premature ovarian failure. Each statement has summary recommendations as a quick aid for the busy clinician.

In vitro HDRA improves survival, prognosis of patients with NSCLC: Study

Chemotherapy is the best broad defense against cancer recurrence after surgical resection. However, it is difficult to predict which patients will benefit from which regimen of anticancer drugs, if at all. Building on existing knowledge, a study published in the September edition of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, analyzed the usefulness of adjuvant chemotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer based on the histoculture drug response assay.

Taking a dietary supplement of organic zinc and the enzyme phytase four days before receiving botulinum toxin injections made the toxin more effective in 93 percent of patients tested in a recent study at The Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Researchers dispute study findings that show greater incidence of surgery for children with CD

A new multi-center study of 854 children with Crohn's disease shows a 5-year cumulative risk of bowel surgery is significantly lower than reported in recent studies. The findings of the study, led by Hasbro Children's Hospital, also indicate that children diagnosed between ages 13 and 16 had an increased risk of bowel surgery, and that a common treatment that begins at diagnosis, immunomodulator therapy, did not alter the risk of surgery.

XARELTO achieves net clinical benefit in treatment of patients with DVT

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals today announced that XARELTO (rivaroxaban), a novel anti-clotting therapy, achieved improvement in net clinical benefit in a study looking at treatment of patients with deep vein thrombosis. DVT is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs, that partially or totally blocks the flow of blood.
